Title: A Music Thread?
Post by: EssexPhil on August 03, 2025, 11:33:27 AM
Thought it might be worth trying to get traction on a music thread. I like to listen to new stuff-whether that is from a new band,  someone before my time, a cover giving new impetus to an old song, whatever. The beauty of streaming services is being pointed to bands you haven't heard before.

If no-one replies, I'll take the hint ;)

So-2 songs from Ireland. First an absolute banger from Kneecap. Then, for balance, an act proving that comedy gold can come from unexpected places

Great idea Phil, the Music Thread Next Door was maybe the most popular & long running thread we had.

I've modified your Post to turn those Links into actual videos.

You can use the YOUTUBE icon above the text box, far left, then insert the link between the two "YOUTUBE" but REMOVE the "s" from "https".

I'm a huge lyrics fan myself, and I often cry unashamedly, (Well sometimes a bit ashamedly) at really poignant lyrics.

I'm the same with poetry.

The thing about music is, everyone should like the same stuff that I like and not that other rubbish.

I can't help with these but if one of those links is to Lonely Boy then great choice. It's one of those songs that make me whish I could dance.

I've spent hours in front of the mirror when no one is home but I still look like Pinocchio.

Lonely Boy. Presume you mean Andrew Gold.

Great lyricist. Though I preferred Never Let her Slip Away.

Music can suit all moods. I like quiet and contemplative-just not all the time. Andrew Gold himself knew what sold for him, and suited his voice. Didn't stop him doing a lot of very different stuff, from songs by The Simpsons and Alvin & The Chipmunks. Or his cover of Monster Mash with Linda Ronstadt

Might interest you to know that his most popular song these days is of a totally different genre. Try the Undead Tombstone Mix of Spooky, Scary Skeletons. At the other end of the spectrum he wrote and produced a lot of stuff for Leo Sayer, like Endless Flight.

Someone I've followed for many years - Davy Knowles (chap from the Isle of Man now mostly US based) - introduced this to me because he plays lead guitar on it. Very tasty track.

I'm closer to the current music scene than I have been for a while, thanks to my 15yo daughter becoming as obsessive a gig-goer as I am.  I'm following her developing music tastes with interest, and have discovered bands such as The K's (currently top of the album charts), The Lathums and Overpass, to name a few that I've watched play live with her recently.

My favourite song of 2025 though remains one linked to my own musical tastes.  My all-time favourite band, Carter USM, disbanded in 2014 but I still get to hear their music played live as part of lead singer Jim Bob's solo tours with his backing band.  He's produced some great solo output too, of which A Song By Me is a particular favourite.  Lyrically, it's absolutely fantastic, as the video done by Happy Toast highlights, and the sound is very punk-era influenced.  2 minutes 42 seconds of absolute joy!

There has not been any decent music or good bands since around 1990, maybe earlier, but yes, that one Curtis put up is almost decent.

Have to disagree Tikay. Luckily having kids in their mid 30's helps oldies like me keep updated. They do listen to some shite too.

I think we have similar tastes especially when it comes to the blues. Bonomassa, Walter Trout, Clapton (Cream), BB King I could go on.

Here's a few from the 90's onwards that I've seen live, some I've seen recently. I'll list them for now and dig out youtube links later.

Alabama 3 from Brixton although they have American twang. Found them via the Sopranos surprisingly as their song is the theme tune.

Miles Davis

Black Keys

The Lathums

Ocean Colour Scene saw them recently at Trentham gardens, first saw them in 96.

The Enemy

All great live.

1 to add to the modern Blues list.

Christone "Kingfish" Ingram. Good place to start is on Jools Holland's programme.

A sublime young guitarist. Can make Hendrix and Prince come alive. Toured extensively with Buddy Guy while still a Teenager.

Probably needs to work on his fitness just a little bit! Otherwise we might not have him for long.

Have you seen/heard much of Joe Bonamassa?
He has the most insane guitar collection!

Here's some that's quite rare - a cover of an EC song actually done well!

Was supposed to see them at Donington in 1994 or 95 when I was still at school, and our cleaner's BF offered to take me with him and his mates.

Parents weren't too keen, so said they would think about it. Conveniently enough, my 'summer trip' left a few days earlier than required and I was in Bangor N.I. while it was going on.

YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4d3WBHTb_I

Managed to snag tickets to see them for the first time ever next summer in Cardiff.

Incredible that they're still going, given the lives they've led, and fondness for self medication over the years.

Allman Brothers Band give their version of The Sky is Crying with extended guitar solos by Warren Haynes & Derek Trucks. In particular, Warren's guitar work here is sensational.

I air guitar the entire thing most nights before I go to bed.

Eric joined ABB for a couple of shows in March 2009 @ Beacon Theatre, NY.
If you haven't seen it then it's worth looking up on YT. I think all the footage is there from both nights.

In the 19th March show:
Key To The Highway – Allman Brothers Band with guest Eric Clapton (lead vocal / guitar)
Dreams – Allman Brothers Band with guest Eric Clapton (guitar)
Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad? – Allman Brothers Band with guest Eric Clapton (lead vocal / guitar)
Little Wing – Allman Brothers Band with guest Eric Clapton. EC (lead vocal / guitar)
Anyday – Allman Brothers Band with guests Eric Clapton ( vocals / guitar) and Susan Tedeschi (vocals)
Layla – Allman Brothers Band with guests Eric Clapton (lead vocal / guitar) and Danny Louis (piano)

In the 20th March show:
Key To The Highway – Allman Brothers Band with guest Eric Clapton (lead vocal / guitar)
Stormy Monday – Allman Brothers Band with guest Eric Clapton (guitar)
Dreams – Allman Brothers Band with guest Eric Clapton (guitar)
Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad? – Allman Brothers Band with guest Eric Clapton (lead vocal / guitar)
Little Wing – Allman Brothers Band with guest Eric Clapton. EC (lead vocal / guitar)
In Memory of Elizabeth Reed – Allman Brothers Band with guest Eric Clapton (guitar)
Layla – Allman Brothers Band with guests Eric Clapton (lead vocal / guitar) and Danny Louis (piano)
