Title: Grosvenor Midlands Medley - Main Event
Post by: snoopy1239 on February 25, 2006, 05:47:53 PM
Howdy ho folks.

Thank the dear Lord, we have a connection. Still only 1 bar on the 3G Vodafone, but it's movement. Yipee!

We've settled down just outside the cardroom. Standing beside me is Arsiton, not to mention Rob Yong, tikay, Jen, and Mr Raab.

Also spotted are:

Womble
RED-DOG
Karabiner
Martin Callaghan
Jeff Buffenbarger
Rumit
Simon Nowab

Watch this space for more names as they trundle through the doors.

Title: Walsall Midlands Medley Main Event LIVE UPDATE
Post by: Djinn on February 25, 2006, 05:51:10 PM
So it's back to work for the Team (Snoops and myself - tikay is playing) in our regular corner in the Grosvenor Walsall.  Comfy chairs, an adaptor, serviceable internet and I think there is steak over there.  People are flooding in but they'll be hard pressed to beat the fields earlier in the week - players galore for all the previous events.

Meant to be starting in 15 minutes or so, with 7,500 chips (X2 - it's double chance) and the usual nice-and-slow structure, Ariston says "Not sure how I'll manage to lose 15,000 chips in the first level...."

Just so you know...

£1,500 buy-in

Double chance freezout

Blinds start at 25/50

45 minute clock

125 entires so far with 187,500 with 187,500 chips in play.

160 were predicted earlier on, not sure if they'll quite reach that number.

No no - we are right next to each other, literally inches from the players.

They did that "You'd better all sit down RIGHT NOW or else" set of announcements just now, and Bad Girl was sat in the restaurant area just as relaxed as can be.  I think she said something like "I'm in no rush for poker."

Bit of a kafuffle on table 7 where Woody Deck, Mad Turk, MH Kazi, Ali Mallu and cardroom supervisor Dani Versace are involved in a debate about mucking cards on the river. Woody wants cards shown, Dani says they can be mucked, Mad Turk mentions chip passing, etc, etc, etc

A familiar ugly head being reared. Not yours Dani, don't worry. hehe

We've just been off on that "Write down what the people you don't know look like before they bust out or move around" trip.  No rush, though, as the blinds are still a teeny-weeny 25 - 50 and it would be a tremendous effort to knock out enough people early on to start moving players around.

Noticed in passing:  Woody Deck has managed to do his first lot of chips already, with what sounded like a combination of actually decent starting hands

El Blondie is wearing a blonde shirt with a bit of misinformation on it (pic coming)

Correction. The fella eliminated was M Rauf, who was moved to Table 14 because Andy Johnson failed to turn turn up.

So, I guess Andy Johnson can be considered... STILL IN.

I've revived him.

You may need to be seated for this one.

Here's a piccy of tikay winning a hand. I know, shocking. I think he might have a stroke if he wins another.

According to tikay, 'I've had no hands, except pocket jacks, aces, ace jack, and two ace kings. Completely Card-dead.'

Ariston is not a happy chappy. He's already dipped into his second rebuy courtesy of a rather forunate Howard Plant.

Howard limped with aces, Ariston checked KT on the big blind.

Flop comes K-T-rag.

Ariston checks, Howard bets 150, Artison raises to 500, Howard moves all-in for 7-8k, Arsiton calls.

River = Ace

Ouch

I feel Ariston's pain.

grr

Mick Jones is sat on tikay's right, and has apparently had KK three times already.  Not that they've done him much good - the first time an all-diamond flop found his Kings both black and someone with the nuts getting a lot of chips as he rivered the top straight and paid off the flush.  The other times, action there was none.  And they look so nice when they're in your hand...

I was passing Lawrence Gosney's table (on which the lovely Crddolly is dealing) when I noticed there appeared to be a 6,000 preflop raise on the table.  It turned out that after five limpers, P. McCloskey had decided to raise but thrown the wrong colour chips in.  Even more worrying was the fact that Lawrence then dwelled over re-raising the gentleman all-in before passing and being shown  Ad Ks.

Double up for Mick Jones in rather dramatic fashion (got a wave over from tikay for this one):

On a flop of  4s 9h 9s he moved in (with a fairly low stack, 3k or so) with the nut flush draw  Aspades 6s.  He was called by  Tc Td.
Turn: 9c (at which point he wasn't too optimistic)
River: 9d and the Ace came through for him!

Title: Re: Grosvenor Midlands Medley - Main Event
Post by: snoopy1239 on February 25, 2006, 07:49:46 PM
Accurate chip counts are tricky at this stage due to the double chance and the difficulty in telling whether or not someone has rebought.

Here's Blondeite Slick Kid, who has named himself after one of the greyhounds he trains.

When I arrived earlier in the week, I spotted Michael in the carpark being hounded by 2 dogs, which I thought were stray. But they were actually his! He keeps them in the van while he plays. I wonder if they have Sky TV in there.

I reckon he should bring them into the casino. Dogs are quite good at poker aren't they. I've seen those paintings.

Mr. Ian Bradley is visiting Update Corner and brings news from the Julian - Simon - Rob table...

a  4d 4h 4s flop got some action from Rob holding 9d 3d (but of course).  Julian re-raised all-in, forcing Simon to pass his pocket Jacks, and, perhaps unsurprisingly, Rob to pass his load of rubbish.  Julian had the Aces, of course.

************************* BREAK****************************

A bit of a rest and some final top-ups for those who haven't needed them yet.  Not among them is Roland de Wolfe, who lost most of his first lot in a rather unlucky pot a few minutes ago.  Holding 6-5 (I think) he saw a Ks 5d 5h flop.  Ahead of the pre-flop raiser, there was another player in too (presumably at least one King floating around).  The turn was irrelevant, and the river brought the Qc.  It all still looked fairly safe, so he bet, but pre-flop raiser guy moved in and turned over pocket Queens which he'd been unable to release earlier.  Good timing for the break then - an anti-tilt mechanism...

Simon Nowab is OUT.

Taken down by Yoyo.

Julian raised preflop with A-K, Tim Flanders flat called, Simon moved all-in for 7.5k.

Julian calls to see pocket nines.

Nine on the flop, but Yoyo four flushes and is now up to around 25k.

The yoyo stikes. Prepare for some hardcore yoyoing.

It's Break Two Time!

And the main news, before one of those long chip count lists:  Willie Tann is getting the Lot!

The newish chip leader has nearly hit 70,000, a cool 20k over his nearest rival.  He is responsible for taking out Shah Koumi just moments earlier, rumoured to be a set over set thing.  In any case he's the only one brave enough on his table to look me in the eye... quite intimidating actually.

Joe Koumi          17,300
Lawrence Gosney  9,500

Marc Goodwin     10,000
Dave Colclough    26,000
JP Kelly               29,000 (oh what a bluff he ran on a certain European Number One...)
Mickey Wernick    7,000
Rumit                  32,600
Nick Gibson          46,000
Darren Grosvenor  23,000
Jeff Buffenbarger  12,800
Roland de Wolfe   14,000  ("I have the starting chips!  Never thought I'd get there...down to 5k a minute ago...")
The Thinker         14,200
Womble               20,000
Paul Dargon         29,000
Ian Woodley        15,000
Iwan Jones          22,500
Kevin Daly           30,000
Julian Thew         20,000
RED-DOG             17,000

I was passing Lawrence Gosney's table (on which the lovely Crddolly is dealing) when I noticed there appeared to be a 6,000 preflop raise on the table.  It turned out that after five limpers, P. JP is OUT, yes, OUT.  With pocket Sixes, and 7,500 chips remaining, he got in cheaply to see a flop of  7s 4h 3d.  When Dave bet out 2,200 he (correctly) came to the conclusion that he was ahead, and 4 5 was the type of hand he was up against.  Actually, it was exactly 4 5 which promptly hit another four to knock him out.  "I played well, so not unhappy," was the verdict.

I have 5% invested in Ralph, so don't be suprised if his chip count crops up frequently.

Convestation with Karabiner.

Me: How we getting on?
Ralph: I think I'm below average. I was on 27k. What's average?
Me: 26k
Ralph: Ah, I used to be average then.
Me: What are you on now?
Ralph: 16k
Me: Don't worry, we can be average later on.

Maybe one day, if we're lucky, we can be above average.

hopefully on the final...

Carlo is on 15k and standing right next to me with a fag (cigarette) in his mouth.

Regarding Woody Deck, he's finding it tough, but seems to be in good spirits. As was mentioned earlier, he's a top notch short stack specialist, so I reckon he's in for the long haul.

Good luck Woody ol' son, blonde are behind you.  ;cheerleader;

Roland de Wolfe is OUT (sorry, WPT Champion Roland de Wolfe is OUT) making a bold all-in move on a board of Ts Kc 2h 9s Jd.  He really piled the pressure on young James Atkin, who dwelled for a long time (beyond the point where he'd decided to call, in our opinion here in Update Corner) and called with the set made by his 9c 9d.  Lots of relief when Roland said, "good call" and he's got a pretty good stack now.

OK going to get your chip queries answered right now... we're down to 65 players here and it's not even 1am.  I don't know if that's par for the course or not, actually.

Breaking News - El Blondie is OUT after finding an under the gun flat caller with KK who presumably didn't have a lot to consider before calling Dave's all-in push on the button with AQ.

Here he is eating a sandwich a little prior to his elimination.

After convincing Malcolm Harewood that Steve Vladar's real name was Steve Bladar, a man Malcolm's known for years, I've been threatened with revenge.

Hi Thakur - they are on a BREAK at the moment, but I will add to the little chip count selection below when they return.

Also - in keeping with our Mis-Naming Weekend, I have been informed that Paul Dargan's name is Dargan.  With an 'a.'  Not an 'o' as previously reported.  But I can't guarantee that Snoopy won't continue misspelling it on purpose.  He's just like that.

I wouldn't count RED out quite yet - with 9,000 that's just a double up away from 18,000.  Which is a double up away from 36,000 which is MORE than average.  I hope that is comforting...

Martin Cavanagh is OUT after two reasonably bad beats in a row...

Firstly a rather unexpected call of his re-raise (holding Ks Qh) from John Shipley (or "Shipley, who's a fish.  And you can put that online") with Jd Qc.  A Jack emerged to get him nearly down to the felt, and then it was his second KQ which fell to Q 10 (and a folder had shown one of the precious Tens).  He doesn't look delighted...

Some Julian Thew Stories Now (and he's been saving them up for you)

Story 1 -

Another hand where KK failed to do its job - after Ian Woodley raised, Julian re-raised him all-in with the Kings, but Ian's 99 spiked a nine to take a 15,000 bite from YoYo's stack.

Story 2 -

Ahrt Kh for Julian;  Aspades Kc for Stuart Nash.  Julian hits the flush - Stuart is OUT.

Story 3 -

Ian Woodley clashes with him one more time - this time with  Jh Js against Julian's  Ad Kh.  He spiked the Ace and his chips are growing into towers - around 65,000 now.

In other big hands just now - Bad Girl is OUT after what looked like a blinds battle where she woke up with Jacks, but found Aces against her.

Ronnie De Beaulox just took down a 70k pot with a pre-flop all-in move against three other players who reluctantly passed.

And James Atkin loses a 50k pot against satellite qualifier Steve Hardwick, all-in preflop.
James: Ks Kc
Steve: Ts Td

Steve was standing up and putting on his coat, when James remarked, "A ten can still come, don't put your jacket on yet..." Oh, prophetic words - first card out was a ten and there was a bit of a head-shaking wall-banging moment for young Atkin who was clearly disappointed with how the fate of the game can sometimes kick you... In his own words, "That sucks."

One more hour and play will be paused until tomorrow afternoon (they are hoping, I would imagine, for around 40 to come back, but they don't seem in a hurry to knock each other out).

They've broken another table as we're down to 45 players here now - and it looks like that 40-person Day Two may well be attainable...

tikay keeps standing up which is creating a bit of confusion as I think he's all in and start weaving my way between the tables to watch.  But he isn't.

Hi Homer - wow you work the same hours as us!

I regret to inform you that RED-DOG has been eliminated at this late stage, making a move with the perfectly reasonable pocket Tens, but finding the bullets behind him.

OK it is the END OF PLAY!!!

Here's a photo of Malclom Hrawod to tide you over until we can get you those thrilling final counts... and I only misspelled his name because he called me a witch for potentially masterminding Snoopy's misleading of him in that Bladar incident.  Which wasn't true.

A pre-exit Ed.

He looks genuinely gutted as he leans against the wall beside me.

A broken man. We've all been there.

It's a cruel game sometimes.
