I went with a friend to watch her dog who had qualified - I hated it<g> Really obnoxious owners and breeders... Quite amazing egos there :) Title: Re: o/t Anyone else gonna be watching Cruft's ? Post by: Sark79 on March 09, 2006, 09:09:07 PM I love the dogs.
But the people kind of P... me off abit. Alot of them seem to treat the dogs as machines. I wonder if they actually like the dogs or are they just a tool to win with. There was one bloke I saw who had kept his dog in for 3 days. All this just to make sure the dog stayed clean. The dog must have been bored to tears. What life is this for a dog. Dogs aren't meant to have perfume and ribbons. Do dogs actually enjoy getting bathed, brushed and styled for 7 hours every day. Do they b....cks. My dogs go for 2 or 3 walks every day. They get love and attention . They play football and swim. They don't get told " Roland and Elvis...get away from that awful mud....you will get so dirty....oh dear look at you" ( said in a posh and stuck up voice) I wonder if the dogs in crufts get that. I am not talking about the working dogs, obedience and agility. They are obviously dogs who have exercise and mental stimulation. And if you have any kind of dog, you will be well aware this is what all dogs need. Most of the owners are arrogant snobs. I did like the Whipet who won a few years ago. Atleast the woman said " I love her she is a special girl, no more showing, we are going to retire now and go home and lay on the couch and watch TV" Most of the others " oh it is a fine example of a dog". No emotion or love for the dog. Do they actually keep the dog after he/she has served their purpose or do they move onto the next dog looking for a potential champion? I know some of them genuinly like the dog, but with most of them I cant see it. I may be wrong, but I don't think I am. Title: Re: o/t Anyone else gonna be watching Cruft's ? Post by: thetank on March 09, 2006, 09:13:52 PM I disagree, just coz they aren't allowed to roll in mud does not mean they aren't content little doggies.
A well trained dog is a happy dog. Title: Re: o/t Anyone else gonna be watching Cruft's ? Post by: Sark79 on March 09, 2006, 09:21:53 PM I agree, mud isn't everyones idea of fun... I am a fan though :D
But do they actually enjoy being carried around and brushed ect most of the day, day after , day after day? I think they would prefer to have a life with walks, smells to sniff and interaction with other dogs. Ok, they do meet other dogs at these shows. But it is hard to wag your tail from the inside of a doggy carry basket. Title: Re: o/t Anyone else gonna be watching Cruft's ? Post by: BlueWolf on March 10, 2006, 12:39:09 AM erm no lol
Title: Re: o/t Anyone else gonna be watching Cruft's ? Post by: Karabiner on March 10, 2006, 12:43:39 AM I think it's cats that get carried around in those things.
Those show dogs look extremely happy to me, unless they're faking it. Title: Re: o/t Anyone else gonna be watching Cruft's ? Post by: BlueWolf on March 10, 2006, 12:56:02 AM Kinda reminds me of those americans who push their kids into beauty pagents, saying they love it when 90% of them hate it
Title: Re: o/t Anyone else gonna be watching Cruft's ? Post by: thetank on March 10, 2006, 01:11:21 AM Those show dogs look extremely happy to me, unless they're faking it. rotflmfao Dogs love attention from their masters. All them dogs at the show are very well treated IMHO. Title: Re: o/t Anyone else gonna be watching Cruft's ? Title: Re: o/t Anyone else gonna be watching Cruft's ? Post by: Chili on March 10, 2006, 01:29:24 AM I hate crufts and everything it stands for.. I used to work for a well known sponsor of crufts???? and had to work it for 2 years running. Most of the time i was walking around with my gob on the floor at some of the things the breeders did. Never have i met more weird, insane and disolusioned people than dog breeders. Cat breeders are a bit better - at least they are funny ecentric.
Title: Re: o/t Anyone else gonna be watching Cruft's ? Post by: ifm on March 10, 2006, 01:42:56 AM i know there are cat lovers on here but i detest the creatures, ewwwwwww
Title: Re: o/t Anyone else gonna be watching Cruft's ? Post by: Karabiner on March 10, 2006, 01:44:51 AM Well I am just a dog lover and the opportunity to see the best examples of all those different breeds gives me great pleasure.
Every year I see this and almost get another dog. Nothing too deep here. Title: Re: o/t Anyone else gonna be watching Cruft's ? Post by: ifm on March 10, 2006, 01:48:25 AM i live very near to the NEC and it is without doubt the most popular event they hold there, they used to close the collector road and use it as a carpark till they extended the NEC!!!!!!
Defo a market for this stuff and no doubt much fun for those who like that sort of thing, just not my cup of tea is all, no offense intended. Title: Re: o/t Anyone else gonna be watching Cruft's ? Post by: Chili on March 10, 2006, 01:51:08 AM Sorry Ralph, i can appreciate your point to get a chance to see all those breeds. My only plus point of working crufts was falling in love with Weimaraners who were jumping around all over the place for a whole day next to me, but i have seen and heard too much about that lifestyle that makes me gag. So the answer to your question is - no, i will not be watching crufts 8)
(you touched on such a pet hate for me, no pun intended) Title: Re: o/t Anyone else gonna be watching Cruft's ? Post by: madasahatstand on March 10, 2006, 02:13:45 AM i agree with chilli. for that amount of show you need a lot of preparation and most of these owners are in business. they MAKE the dog look good. most of the dogs do look happy when you see them but they are running and interacting with their owners and having fun. what about the times outside the ring? thats what i fear is not pretty.
all i say is let the dogs be dogs and get totally boggin and get matts now and again. when im out with my mums collie she goes into instinct mode and its great to see. you see a lot of breeds in the country and the dogs are having a great time. maybe they should do a reality dogs show? :D Title: Re: o/t Anyone else gonna be watching Cruft's ? Post by: Sark79 on March 10, 2006, 09:33:53 AM Sorry if my reply seemed abit extream.
I only wanted to point out that perhaps the dog doesn't like this as much as the owner says. In my opinion dogs should do what dogs are suppose to do. This is run around and enjoy theirselves. Unfortunately dogs only live for a limited period of time. This is such a sad thing. When I see some of the yobs and scum robbing old grannies and attacking helpless people in the street for only a few pounds. I can't help but think, it should be them that has the limited lifespan. In my honest opinion dogs have far nicer personalities than alot of people. It is up to us to make their 12-20 years a happy time and a life filled with excitment and fun. I had a relative who won one of the lower classes in crufts three or four times. Unfortunatley I had the experience of staying with this person more often than I would want to as a child. I saw first hand how her dogs were treated. They weren't treated cruely in my view. They were fed and lived in a comfortable environment. However they weren't given that extra ingredient that makes the whole pleasure of having a dog so worthwhile. Love and attention. Her dogs were treated like a tool to win with, much in the same way a racing driver treats his car. She was constantly tweaking and brushing and groomed the poor dogs for hours each day. There was no cuddles or play fights over a dog toy. Over this period, I had the bad luck of meating many of her friends. Every single one of them didn't see the dogs as loving animals. They saw them as machines. This is why, for me crufts degrades the dog. I may tune into crufts for the obedience, flyball and agility. They are events I am convinced the dogs like to do. Keeping a dog indoors in order to preserve his/her immaculate coat is no life for a dog. Dogs do travel in carriers. The toydog class does. Maltese Terriers for example. Title: Re: o/t Anyone else gonna be watching Cruft's ? Post by: thetank on March 10, 2006, 09:48:23 AM In my opinion dogs should do what dogs are suppose to do. Just playing ifm's advocatate here, you obviously have a fondness for doggie wogs and I don't mean to infer anything from the following. Do you keep your dog in an urban enviroment? Do you feed it dog food or do you go out hunting with it. What is a dog supposed to do? When they were domesticated, we, as a species, pretty much made that up ourselves. Title: Re: o/t Anyone else gonna be watching Cruft's ? Post by: Sark79 on March 10, 2006, 10:06:43 AM In my opinion dogs should do what dogs are suppose to do. What is a dog supposed to do? When they were domesticated, we, as a species, pretty much made that up ourselves. I understand what you mean here, you are correct. However as we ( dog owners) are the pack leaders. In my opinion, it is our duty to make a dogs life pleasurable. It is obvious that for me this means lots of walkies and fun. I do keep my dog in an urban environment, as I live in an area with lots of other houses. However I take my dog into the country for his walks. There he is able to run free without the danger of cars, bikes, ect. I would never go hunting with my dogs. It is obvious that a part of a dogs natural instincts are to hunt. However, as I am one of the carers ( along with my family) for my dogs. I have sidesteped this neccesary part of his life by providing food . What is a ifm's? I am not saying I am correct. You may be correct. The owners/breeders may be correct. Who know's..... Title: Re: o/t Anyone else gonna be watching Cruft's ? Post by: thetank on March 10, 2006, 10:09:41 AM What is a ifm's? Blondite, known for his ;ifm; By ifm's advocate I meant devils advocate. ie, Presenting a contrary opinion that may not necessary be a personal bellief held by you, just posting something for the sake of it to put off updating your STT thread because you just lost a wad of dosh and are trying to think of something to write about that isn't too self indulgent. I thought this may be it. Not the updating the STT thread bit, but the ' presenting a contrary opinion' part. lol But seriously, like I said I am not claiming to be correct. These are only my opinions. I will say no more about the matter... I promise...... total silence on the matter from now on... Title: Re: o/t Anyone else gonna be watching Cruft's ? Post by: Rod Paradise on March 10, 2006, 11:16:55 AM I tend to agree with Sark re a dog owner's responsibilites to the dog. And I've never met a dog that didn't dive into a mud puddle for the fun of it at some point.
As I live in a city centre flat I couldn't have a dog, (and I've recently developed doggy allergies :( ) . But once the lottery's won, the country home & a pack of dogs are on the cards. Title: Re: o/t Anyone else gonna be watching Cruft's ? Post by: Trace on March 10, 2006, 11:32:38 AM I won't be watching it, but could list some people that I would love to see entering it..

Overall collies seem to do better in the intelligence comps though Title: Re: o/t Anyone else gonna be watching Cruft's ? Post by: vinni on March 12, 2006, 11:52:18 PM wot sort of life have you people got ,

Horses for courses. I am sure that some may find mindless teasing about someone's sexuality rather pointless and boring as well :) Discretion IS the better part of valour. So, best to allow people to talk about what they find interesting, and if you don't - don't post about it :) Heid :) Title: Re: o/t Anyone else gonna be watching Cruft's ?
