Title: Steam Train Help Required Post by: The Truth on March 16, 2006, 09:21:47 PM P4C has an event coming up in Swindon on May 14th. Titled the 'Great Western'. As a result and because a sponsor is picking up the trophy tab I am looking for a model steam train for the winners trophy - any suggestions anyone?
Make no mistake I am out to win this one as it is my homecoming after nearly 20 years away, so it has to be a nice piece in GWR livery. Thanks in advance Title: Re: Steam Train Help Required Post by: RED-DOG on March 16, 2006, 09:29:38 PM To quote his nibs "It's not a train, it's a locomotive!"
Title: Re: Steam Train Help Required Post by: The Truth on March 16, 2006, 09:31:03 PM Apologises to RED-DOG and of course Tikay.
Title: Re: Steam Train Help Required Post by: tikay on March 16, 2006, 09:33:13 PM Never mind all that "his nibs" malarky, it may WELL be a train he's after.
I suspect you don't know the difference betwen a Locomotive and a Train. Want me to tell you........? It's no trouble. Title: Re: Steam Train Help Required Post by: Royal Flush on March 16, 2006, 09:33:40 PM Please god no.
Title: Re: Steam Train Help Required Post by: RED-DOG on March 16, 2006, 09:36:32 PM I thought the locomotive was the engine and the train was engine and carriages together, no?
Title: Re: Steam Train Help Required Post by: raab11 on March 16, 2006, 09:38:27 PM thats what i thought, tikay? In all seriousness I guess it is a locomotive I am looking for (the engine bit at the front) which can be mounted on a wooden plinth. Do you have any suggestions for the Locomotive that should be featured and a model shop/supplier that may be able to oblige. Title: Re: Steam Train Help Required Post by: The Truth on March 16, 2006, 09:41:51 PM Please god no. bear in mind flushy if Brunel had ever built bi-planes they would have been the best bi-planes in the world!!!!!!!!! Title: Re: Steam Train Help Required Post by: tikay on March 16, 2006, 09:45:04 PM I thought the locomotive was the engine and the train was engine and carriages together, no? He never asked for a Locomotive, he asked for a "model steam train". These things are very important to get right. Title: Re: Steam Train Help Required Post by: Cybertim on March 16, 2006, 11:05:23 PM there is a model shop in Candleriggs Glasgow that sells new and second Hand trains and is about Ten minutes walk from Cincins
the Engine you want is GWR KING "JAMES II" No 6008 and A second hand one will cost you around 30 quid though. There is also a model that you can get which is already on a plinth and its made of Coal. it looks great and because its Black it could belong to any railway including the Great western, hard to get and costs around 40 quid but I might know someone who can get you one Title: Re: Steam Train Help Required Post by: The Truth on March 16, 2006, 11:17:31 PM Thanks Tim :)up
Any help is appreciated on this one - I have a budget from the sponsor of up to £200 but obviously if I can spend less I will no doubt convince them to donate the difference to the charity. But the one in black would no be noy good - is HAS to be GWR (Great Wesern Railway, aka God's Wonderful Railway) Green for it to be authentic. The GWR Main Line Loco's were famous for their livery, amongst many other things. Title: Re: Steam Train Help Required Post by: Heid on March 16, 2006, 11:38:50 PM Mr Kay, I need to introduce you to my father one day - it would be a long long conversation, but my god, you would both be as happy as pigs in poo.
Title: Re: Steam Train Help Required Post by: tikay on March 16, 2006, 11:46:04 PM That would be nice Heid, but I hope he's not a Railway Geek - they are such crashing bores I'm told.

If memory serves me it was originally sent to America and then came back again. If you can get the model fitted with a singe chimney its much prized as it was fitted with a double chimney in the mid fifties.. Ran right up to 1962ish as well so must have had a fair mileage. The New Great Western trains are BLUE.. shocking Title: Re: Steam Train Help Required Post by: The Truth on March 17, 2006, 12:23:59 AM This is fascinating stuff. For a very comprehensive historyof the King George V I have found this http://homepage.ntlworld.com/andrew.herbert1/andrew_herbert/steam/kgv.html#History
Title: Re: Steam Train Help Required Post by: Cybertim on March 17, 2006, 12:31:14 AM wow has everything... great find. might write to the guy and let him know the mileage was 1,910,424 miles, hehe just found that out.
I went through a phase of Railway modelling and I have a huge set in my garage around 22 feet by 12.. great fun.. I must talk to you guys at the Blonde Bash about my stamp collection and display of various interesting bottle tops please remind me <GRIN> Title: Re: Steam Train Help Required Post by: tikay on March 17, 2006, 12:43:45 AM there is a model shop in Candleriggs Glasgow that sells new and second Hand trains and is about Ten minutes walk from Cincins the Engine you want is GWR KING "JAMES II" No 6008 and A second hand one will cost you around 30 quid though. The New Great Western trains are BLUE.. shocking That's all very true Cyber. My Grandfather - Grandfather Angelll after whom my youngest (well only now) Cat was named, both fired that Loco, and later drove it too, and in fact he accompanied it to America in the mid-thirties, during which time it gained the famous bell. And my Dad did both too, as a Fireman, & later as Engine Driver, & spookily, for a while, Grandad Angell was the driver & Dad was the Fireman on that beautiful machine. In those days, Drivers had their "own" engine, & thery were both extremely proud of KG5. Both Grandad & Dad were also the "Royal Drivers" (that's "Link One - Links were the grades of Drivers) on the GWR, which sort of gave us special status on the Railway Estate which we lived on in Acton, West London. It was built there as it was in close proximity to thge local "shed", Old Oak Common (shed code 81a), the creme de la creme of sheds, with the possible exception of Swindon, which had a special aura, as that was where all the wonderful GWR Locos were designed & built. Happy days. I could go on & on....... Title: Re: Steam Train Help Required Post by: The Truth on March 17, 2006, 12:47:31 AM This has been so interesting that my mind has been made up for me - At the Swindon event the trophy will be a mounted model of the King George V - thanks guys.
