Title: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: Chili on March 29, 2006, 03:39:00 PM Something I've just received - worth knowing......
It's worth reading and passing on if you have the time. A bit of useful advice - it is true, someone has asked the Dorset Police It's been said that this number works in the UK - thought you should know this....The number does work from a mobile. This actually happened to someone's daughter. Lauren was 19 yrs old and in college. This story takes place over the Christmas/New Year's holiday break. It was the Saturday before New Year and it was about 1.00pm in the afternoon, and Lauren was driving to visit a friend , when an UNMARKED police car pulled up behind her and put its lights on. Lauren's parents have 4 children (of various ages) and have always told them never to pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather wait until they get to a service station, etc. So Lauren remembered her parents' advice, and telephoned 112 from her mobile phone. This connected her to the police dispatcher. She told the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her and that she would not pull over right away but wait until she was in a service station or busy area. The dispatcher checked to see if there was a police car where she was and there wasn't and he told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back-up already on the way. Ten minutes later 4 police cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her. One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground.........the man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes. I never knew that bit of advice, but especially for a woman alone in a car, you do not have to pull over for an UNMARKED car. Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going to a "safe" place. You obviously need to make some signals that you acknowledge them i.e., put on your hazard lights) or call 112 like Lauren did. Too bad the mobile phone companies don't give you this little bit of wonderful information. So now it's your turn to let your friends know about 112. This is good information that I did not know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please pass on to all your friends, especially any females. Take care when you are driving ladies! Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: stallyon on March 29, 2006, 03:41:35 PM hold on...if you dial 112 to check out if the unmarked police car behind you is legit then wouldnt you get done for using a mobile phone while driving?
Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: thetank on March 29, 2006, 03:43:01 PM I think it's justified in this scenario stallyon.
Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: Chili on March 29, 2006, 03:43:41 PM :dontask: Good point stallyon but i for one would take that risk!! Do you think they would use common sense in this instance? Who knows!!
Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: Graham C on March 29, 2006, 03:46:25 PM shocking story - a good bit of advise/info there
Keep safe Blondes :) Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: AndrewT on March 29, 2006, 03:51:01 PM That's odd - last time I saw this email 'Lauren' was American.
http://www.hoax-slayer.com/lauren-677.html (http://www.hoax-slayer.com/lauren-677.html) I thought the email didn't ring true - who has ever heard of anyone referring to a 'police dispatcher' in this country? EDIT: Now I come to think of it, I think the original American mail got mixed up with the urban myth which circulated just after the London bombing last year which said that if you couldn't get through to 999 you should dial 112 as that 'uses satellites'. It's a fascinating thing to follow these types of mails as they go round the internet. Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: Chili on March 29, 2006, 03:54:35 PM Hey Andrew dont ruin a perfectly good piece of advice! No matter where it came from, i called 112 to verify and indeed does get you in touch with our emergency services. So its still something i am thankfull of keeping in mind when i drive around on me tod!
Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: Decider on March 29, 2006, 04:00:59 PM So they are also getting loads of calls from folk checking that they are the equivalent of 999.
These mail hoaxers have a lot to answer for, how is the next lady meant to get through to 112 when everyone is calling to check what it is. :D Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: AndrewT on March 29, 2006, 04:04:54 PM Here's a fuller account of how the email changed over the years - it's been circulating for about four years, apparantly.
http://www.breakthechain.org/exclusives/policestop.html (http://www.breakthechain.org/exclusives/policestop.html) Chili - 112 just acts as a link to 999, the only difference is that 112 may be able to connect to a mast from another phone network if there are none of your particular network nearby. I'm not having a go at you for posting it - you only had other people's best interests at heart - I'm just giving people the full story of the email. One of the most interesting things about these types of emails is seeing which ones 'take off' and circulate for years and which ones are a damp squib and go nowhere. Very often, the long-lived ones concern stories which impart some sort of information which could prove valuable to the person the mail gets sent to (remember the 'I picked up a wallet which an Arab dropped and he was so thankful he warned me to stay away from Birmingham/Manchester/wherever this Saturday' mail which went round after the 9/11 attacks?). Anyway, 112 connects to the same people as 999. Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: Chili on March 29, 2006, 04:05:49 PM Ok guys, i understand there is a lot of hoax e-mails that make the rounds and alot of rubbish that needs to be ignored....but if someone picks up ONE bit of advice from this post then i am glad i posted it. All i know is that if an unmarked car tried to pull me over before i read this then i would probably just have pulled over. Probably nieve of me but i live and learn.
Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: Chili on March 29, 2006, 04:08:58 PM right ok, i get the picture. Call 999 :D
Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: AndrewT on March 29, 2006, 04:10:55 PM So, to summarise.
1) Don't stop for unmarked police cars. 2) 112 is the same as 999 3) We all love Chili because she loves us. :) Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: thetank on March 29, 2006, 04:13:27 PM (remember the 'I picked up a wallet which an Arab dropped and he was so thankful he warned me to stay away from Birmingham/Manchester/wherever this Saturday' mail which went round after the 9/11 attacks?). I love that one Grateful Arab : Stay away from Manchester. Wallet returner : Why? Is there going to be an attack? Grateful Arab : No, it's coz it's a dump. rotflmfao rotflmfao Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: MPOWER on March 29, 2006, 04:16:33 PM Good story Chilli and yes if someone gets a bit of advice so much the better.
There was a story in Nottingham years ago after a chap left the Black Orchid. He had a drink with some asian doctors who offered him a lift home. He woke up next morning in a field with a Kidney missing. I love the Urban Myth stories anyone got any more. Regards M Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: Chili on March 29, 2006, 04:19:44 PM Yep, heard that one M but i didnt tell people on a forum :D

I was so ill and cold that i spent the entire evening asleep on the floor of the ladies loo's under the radiator. Think i had the better night than most.
Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: MPOWER on March 29, 2006, 04:40:57 PM Did any Asian doctors buy you a drink, or can you remember if your back felt a little sore when you woke up.
Regards M Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: Bongo on March 29, 2006, 05:14:01 PM 112 is the EU standard emergency number, ie it should work in all countries.

I for one will be showing my daughter this thread , a young girl driving alone should always be wary , flashing light or no flashing light !! Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: ifm on March 29, 2006, 06:40:18 PM I thought everyone knew about 112, the amount of times i have looked at my mobile bill and found 999 calls on it is unbelievable!!
They should disable the 999 feature on mobiles and just leave it at 112 (you know, where you don't have to unlock the phone to dial those numbers), then we all wouldn't be wasting despatchers time with unnecessary calls. Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: Cybertim on March 29, 2006, 06:57:09 PM Hey Andrew dont ruin a perfectly good piece of advice! No matter where it came from, i called 112 to verify and indeed does get you in touch with our emergency services. So its still something i am thankfull of keeping in mind when i drive around on me tod! Are you NUTS? by calling 112 and tying up an operator for even a few seconds you could cost someone their lives. just so that you can verify if it works? lets hope someone isn't phoning 112 to verify it when its YOU that needs them and cant get through Just read back the above post and it reads a bit harsh.. It isn't meant to be ;).. just trying to make a point Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: Chili on March 29, 2006, 10:57:21 PM "a bit harsh" Jeez - why dont you blind fold me and put me infront of a firing squad?? Sorry for my naivety but i just didnt know about 112. Next time i pass on what i thought was good information i will clear it with Intellegence agency first.
Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: thetank on March 29, 2006, 11:05:25 PM Any last requests?
Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: Graham C on March 29, 2006, 11:12:14 PM I did hear, but I haven't tried it, that you can also dial 911 over here to get the fuzz and also in the US, you can dial 999.
Not sure if it's true or not though Still a good bit of advise Chilli Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: Scottish Dave on March 29, 2006, 11:18:40 PM Right i think this thread has gotten a little out of hand here
1/ Chilli thought it was a legitimate Email and thought it appropriate to inform her "friends" 2/ once she realised it wasnt legit, she recognised that it wasnt legit, but still felt good about posting as she learned something new from the email and still felt it good reason to post it. why some of you feel the need to take the piss out of her or rib her for posting something that could save someones life, i dont understand. She was only being a nice person by passing it on. I for one am glad she posted this. Scottish Dave Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: ifm on March 29, 2006, 11:21:43 PM Wow, over reaction alert!
Cyber was a bit harsh (well a lot actually) but that's about it, i think we all understand the sentiment. Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: Cybertim on March 29, 2006, 11:40:23 PM I read my post and edited it BEFORE anyone read it.. I know it was done with the best of intentions and thats why I did the edit.... I suppose there are are people out there who havent seen the TVadverts or the programmes or the radio and newspaper ads saying dont call the emergency services unless its an emergency.. and Chilli is obviously one of those.. sorry Chilli
Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: Trace on March 29, 2006, 11:42:08 PM I too had seen this email in a different form too, but I did NOT know about 112.
Thank you Chili for raising the awareness of this. xxx Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! of course they do and I know that Chilli's advice and her post were first class... but surely someone who even thought that 112 MIGHT get you through to emergency services still wouldnt try it? well obviously not. On the plus side its great that people know that 112 will get you through.. someone toldme that one of the reasons that they dont advertise 112 in this country is in case people try it to find out.. I think any info given in the right spirit should be welcomed. Good on you Chilli. My Sarah would of done the samething it's better to be a bit naive than trying to be the clever bugger all the time and half the time your wrong Anyway Is 112 like 118118 Regards M Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: Chili on March 30, 2006, 12:07:00 AM Thank you trace and thank you Scottish Dave for your comments but everyone is entitled to their opinions and this forum is such a place where we can voice our views openly and freely. Cybertim took offence to something i did and told me so. With further personal information from Cybertim i understand his reaction also but in all innocence and not wanting to post dud information i had to call the number, in fact expecting it not to work anyway. The guy answered "hello emergency" and i hung up instantly not wanting to keep them on the line. End of.
So we can all start being nicey nice again and anyone want a kiss? :-* Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! They normally hold the line open blocking your phone or call you back repeatedly until you let them know there is no problem, if it's a landline they actually came to my house when my daughter phoned 999. I'll have a kiss BTW :D Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: MPOWER on March 30, 2006, 12:18:37 AM ifm

Why are you rich? Regards M Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: Chili on March 30, 2006, 12:24:51 AM No, on relection cancel the kisses - i'm not in the mood! Think i'll go to bed and write today off as "not the best"
Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: Royal Flush on March 30, 2006, 12:31:02 AM I dunno whats worse, calling them up for no reason, or hanging up as soon as you get an answer!!!
I am quite amazed people don't know about 112, it used to be in all the mobile phone instructions/manuals infact some phones when out of network range would read "112 only" I wouldn't suggest to anyone to carry on driving if a police car is trying to pull you over, that is -EV Title: Re: O/T VERY important information for all lone drivers! Post by: Cybertim on March 30, 2006, 12:32:56 AM group hug ;)
one thing for the people in Scotland (England is different in most places). IF you accidentally dial 112 or 999 from your mobile DONT hang up... just tell the operator you dialled by mistake, they are very good about it and very used to it.. The Scottish system "grabs" your phoneline and wont release it until they do checks which take up loads of time.. that way if you are stuck in the middle of nowhere and your battery runs out or you lose consciousness you can still get help... if you are driving or walking about they can tell you are moving and automatically drop the line.. they cant check every time but they do try their best to track you down so a quick apology or call back is actually appreciated... the other thing in Scotland is to store a local police/fire/ambulance station number on your mobile.. that way if you are within 30 or so miles of that station just call that number instead of 999 and they will usually get help to you a bit quicker.. vodafone and 02 put all 999 calls from mobiles to two call centres who usually find it slightly more difficult to locate you than your local police fire and ambulance station will.. k vote now for the most boring post of the year <grin> |
