Hello and welcome to Dublin!

In about half an hour the deep-stack wonder that is the Irish Open will commence, and the players are a-gathering...

We flew in yesterday after a little RyanAir delay and a little pre-comp blonde group managed to have a little party, in spite of everything being a bit closed in a Good Friday sort of way.  So with the reckless fun quota filled for the week, it's time for some serious journalism.

Let's start with a couple of players milling near here - Stephen McLean, Julian Thew, Jan Heitmann and George (remember the Vic - more on them later), tikay, Chili, Joe Beevers, Stuart Nash, Mick Jones... that's just a taster.

Where am I?

An enormous number of general rules are being run through by Liam Flood, with 30 - 50% attention.  We've gone through not exposing your hand, being in your seat at the start of a hand, not being abusive (15 min penalty), etc. etc.

This has been going on for about, oh, an hour, but the sound of gently riffling chips is beginning to rise.  I think they're impatient to get going, and I don't blame them.

Snoopy is a little, shall we say, hazy, after a group of us stayed up rather all night, drinking wine and watching Jan Heitmann do the most amazing card magic you've ever seen.  Almost creepy.  But he's perking up, with a nice bottle of water to keep him company.

Just to let all of you know.... the Munich crowd is watching again.
We had the pleasure of playing with Jan AND George in our weekly home game after they got back from the Vic's.... to say they were pumped up would be mildly put!

George raises to 125, the small blind calls and Jan folds his big blind.

Flop comes 7 5 3. Unnamed small blind guy bets 200, George calls.

The turn is another 3, Mr Small Blind bets 600, George calls.

The river is another 5, our friend Small Blind bets 800, and George just keeps on calling.

Mr Small Blind has to show his King high, and George takes it with his A7.

Hurrah for that.

Roy Brindley is an early leader with 22,000 - and part of the reason is that he was the man responsible for Julian's early departure...

Marky147 filled me in (he has 9,200): The pot got a bit out of hand on the turn - the Td, which brought top set for Roy, and a pair of Nines with a flush draw for Julian, who held Qd 9d.  Roy bet out 2k, Julian made it 7k, and then it was all over, with no change on the river.

Meanwhile, B.A. Kildalen, co-creator of the Norwegian Poker magazine, is keeping us up to date on some Scandie news... the front page incidentally features the whole Team Norsemen Looking Cool.

Mike Caro is OUT in rather spectacular fashion - I got the lowdown from Dave O'Callaghan in the break...

With four limpers in the pot (including Dave) the flop came Qd 7c 7h.
It checked round to Mike on the button, who pushed in for 7,000 into a 400 pot... but the big blind found he could just about call with his Qc Qh. 

It turned out that Mike had the monstrous Ad 2c (suits not accurate) and his big steal backfired.

James Akenhead finds himself yet again on Joe Grech's table.  They have 11,050 and 8,000 respectively, and I don't think they've taken the brakes off yet.  Then again, it's been a half hour since I had a look over there.  This room is very large, but nicely spaced out so we can wander round the tables in comfort.  But with everyone playing at once, it's tough to see everything - like watching individual termites in their little castle...

Abel Meijberg is the CHIP LEADER with over 40,000, having overtaken Roy the Boy and Peter Roche.  Apparently he's just come out on the right side of lots of fair-to-medium pots rather than doubling up spectacularly.

Matt made it 1,200 to go (blinds 200/400 ante 25), Mick called on the small blind and so did big blind Joe Beevers.

The flop came Ten high, two hearts, which fit Mick's Kh Th pretty well.  Matt moved in for 6k with the Kc Ts and Mick got rid of Joe by pushing for 22,000.  Freerolling, he hit the 5h on the river to knock Matt out and pick up a tidy pot - he's rivalling chip leader Peter Roche now...

I can't help getting the feeling that the bigger crowd he attracts by necessitating lengthy arguments and rulings, the more he acts up - but I couldn't tear myself away...

He raised to 3,000 from middle position, and a little scuffle broke out over how he'd bet it, unclearly, or a string bet, or all in one motion or not etc. etc. and the floor guy came over and warned him without actual penalty.  Then the small blind pushed in for about 6,000 total.
"I'd better look now, I haven't looked," said Stephen, "Is that an 'I want to give it a shot to double up' bet, or an 'I have a real hand' bet?"
"Bit of both," his opponent replied.

Eventually, talking about his rag Ace and something about the pot size, he called - showing  Aspades 3c.  His opponent held the Ad Ac!
"I thought it would be a tough one," said Stephen, halfheartedly muttering about the flush even as he was resigned to losing the pot.  "Nice hand."

In 20 minutes they've helpfully agreed to send the counts our way!  So not quite (yawn) bedtime yet...

Hi All,

I've escaped to my Hotel room to avoid the embarrassment of telling everyone how I busted out so stupidly.

Been above average the whole day, almost from Hand 1, but barely played a hand since midnight, & I dwindled down to average. At laat found some sort lof hand, A-J suited, got involved, & I was in for 11k before I reluctantly had to let it go on the Turn. So now I'm sub-average  for the first time all comp.

I had been moved to Stephen Pearce's table at about 0100, & boy oh boy, does he rattle on. We ended up playing about 12 hands in an hour, as he went through his "I'm gonna belittle you" routine every single hand. Three times in that time he limped with Aces.......& got paid each time.

So he limps again, 2 more limp with him, & I am on the Button with 6-6. Blinds are 800-1,600  (plus ante of 100) so there is 8k or so in the pot. I have around 19k, & I'm trying to figure how to play this. Limp? Pass? Raise? If Raise, how much? Well,whatever, while I'm trying to get my head round this, decide what to do, when for some inexplicable reason I say "all-in", & push my stack in. Lapse of concentration? Tired? Stephen's non-stop yap had got to me? All of those I guess, but really, just a moment of madness, there's no other way to explain it. Anyways, Stephen has AA - obviously - & that's that, & I exited the cardroom PDQ in sheer embarrassment at my stupidity.

I've had some nice draws Online this week, ahead about $4k or $5k, but maybe played too much, plus the pace of Online is so much faster than it was tonight, & I had a job keeping my concentration. I dunno. To be fair, I shoulda busted out hours before, after playing QQ so cute that I cleverly tempted Matey Boy to get all his chips in the middle with KK, but I caught a Q, how embarrassing was that?

So it's Plan B for me now, luckily I rarely have a quiet day, so I will get a plane home on Sunday night. Poker 425 asked me, if I failed to Final in Dublin, to get my arse down to Brighton with a Camera Crew on Monday, so that's what I will try & do.

On a brighter note, I am absolutely made up at Chili's game today. This is a really tough field - big-time tough, 339 of them, and her stack was down to less than 5k early, but she hung in, gambled a little, then fought back with great patience & focus. Hers was the performance of the day in this field, imo. She has inprressed many a good judge today, with her temprement, guile and judgement, not so say bravery in the biggest poker comp of her career so far. There will be many more, you can be sure of that.

Sure will Peter. I will try & get her to put a little Post up, but I need to make sure she gets to bed sharpish, it's been a long day - she left home at 0600 this morning, 21 hours ago, & play starts again at 3pm Sunday, so she's wrell tired. She was flagging around midnight, but Jen revved her up with wise words & coffee.

Nick Whiten doubled up to around 60 or 70k just before I exited with a real stonker of a hand, just take a look at this one. He Raised it up Pre-Flop with  Kh Qh, Stephen Pearce, inevitably, calls.

And he likes this flop.

How can they only have 339 players when they have been saying "event sold out, make sure you have a place before you book your flight etc? If the capacity was 350 why didnt they have 2 flights(2 starting days) and raise it to 700? Or put another 150 players in the Merrion and move them to the hotel as space became available? Turning people away cant be a good idea.....

Hello peeps, thanks again for all the support. Jeez this place is awesome.  I managed to get a few hours kip but my brain hurts.  Yesterday was by far the toughest day of poker I have ever been through.  Every emotion and every poker situation I felt and had.  I did my little yoyo imitation and VERY thankful to still be in today.

Who knows what today will bring but I will attempt to fire on all cylinders having 36,500 with an average count of nearly 40k.  85 hopefuls still in, I think they will go down fast initially as the shorties try for that double up.

Starting 3pm Micko.  On the way there now.
