Title: to camp or not to camp
Post by: madasahatstand on April 16, 2006, 10:29:24 AM
hi all
im wondering if i should get bradley out of his bed and head up the higlands to camp for a night the pros are that we could do a long walk through a nice valley and look at the stars tonight while tending the open fire and drinking wine. i could take my telescope and we could have roast potatoes stuck in the fire.
the cons are that it might pour down tonight and we might be stuck in the tent all night. theres a 40 per cent chance of rain. what would you do?

mad

Id go all day long.

Nothing better than a lovly trek and a few glasses of wine under the stars and some marsh mallows on the fire..

And there is just something about being in a tent with a CD player on low and listening to the rain on the roof of your tent.

What ya waiting for girl? get that man out of bed and get ya walking boots on......

And have a lovely time.

Jim.

Perhaps that's just coz hes just got up, get some food in him and ask him again.

Sounds like an A++ plan.

I don't like beasties and bugs so its a triumphant NO from me.

I am definately not a fan of the outdoors, furthest I will venture is to the back garden with a case of beer, but as the gardens not south facing there ain't much sun, so its kinda parky!

anyway I have a party to go to.

We've WON the League AGAIN - Fly the Flag, Fly the Flag.

I'm only going for a party, I'm only going for a party!!!

well just back and bathed after a nights wild camping in glen etive, the most beautiful valley i know. the heiniken trick worked kev.  :)up It was great fun! wild weather for most of the time with plenty of dry times lol..

ive attached some photos and would encourage you to visit. only dont do what some other folk have done and leave litter and mess. the basic principle of wild camping is leave the place as if youve never been there. the shot of the tent has our salvaged wood for the fire. i dragged the huge branch a mile and the pine branch all by myself. the effort was worth it. you can see brads ikea bag with his gathered wood. the fire got off to a roaring start and went out to the embers 3 times and eventually beat us. at least it lasted some of the night.

the only question i have now is do i spark open my bottle of leffe or is it too early?

If it's cold enough, it's not too early.

I am glad you had a good time.   I know that area really well, Mad.   It is a fantastic place first thing on a Summers morning, the mist coming down off the hills and the bright sky fighting to shine through.

I liked the pics.

Great photos Mad.

The only problem with the campsite was that the road should be about ten miles further away!  Ditch the axe and anything else that weighs more than 2 ounces (except for an ice axe) and see how much further you can get........I trust you did climb one or two of those wee hills?

I think I will add Glen Etive to the itinerary for the 'Walk around The Highlands' that I'm planning.  It looks wonderful.  Any more recommendations for places that have to be included?

Anyone have any tips for fending off the dreaded Scottish midgie that is trained to eat Sassenachs alive?  Is wearing a skirt really the only answer?  I know Kev likes wearing these things, but I might meet someone I know......

How would you pronounce Glen Etive.  I always had this discussion with a guy I used to work with.  He said that 'Etive' is pronounced as in the word 'Feet'.  However I think it should be pronounced as in the word 'Set'.

12bar, that isnt really a road you can see, its a single lane dirt track, wich ends about 200 meters up to the left, its a 10 mile very slow drive from the main road, very isolated,i would reccomend skye also, the drive from glen garry to skye is trully amazing, and the cullins(red and black) are awsome!!

mad the easy way to keep warm is to keep moving and to keep working diging a trench keeps the whole body warm

Cool, Mad.  Everytime we discussed the Highlands at luchtime and this topic came up. We could never agree.  I pronounce it as you do, as in 'set'.

Mad, we were going to go camping this week as the kids were off, but the weather stopped us. It's been bad all week and cold - and with 3 weans, we need to watch what we are doing. Glad you had a great time, though and the views always make the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

Wow, what wonderful pictures. Thanks Mad.

My Retirement Plan included a 6 month tour right round the coast of Scotland, just me, a dog & a camper van. The rather strange road that poker has taken me down has delayed the Tour, but these pics reminded me of why I gotta do it.

It remains on the Wish List, unticked.
