Title: I had a near miss
Post by: Sark79 on April 17, 2006, 01:48:07 PM
This morning,  I was eating my breakfast and watching a bit of the news for the snooker results.  I had a cup of tea in my hand and was eating my usual breakfast.

I heard a crack and all of a suden my roof fell in. Not just a little bit, the whole bloody roof.  I jumped out of my skin and threw the cup of tea into the air. After the first bit fell, I paused and saw that the rest was coming down as well. I leaned into  an area by the window and watched the rest fall past me.

I was seriously lucky. I am not sure why it fell in. I checked for dampness but it was all dry. I have a mate who is a joiner coming round after work to check it out.

I keep looking up at it.  I still can't believe my living room roof is now on the floor.

I need a beer.

Not got camera unfortunately. I am gonna buy one of those throw away ones later .   I have looked upstairs in the area where the roof fell. There is still wooden bits where the roof fixed onto. I am trying to move anything heavy incase any more falls.  It may just be old age. His house is old and I don't know if the roof has ever been fixed.

How to tell if you are addicted to Blonde:

1) Roof falls in and you still manage to come online to tell people about it..... LOL

OMG Sark, glad you are ok!!! and hope you get it sorted out asap.

lol. thanks.

I am suppose to be studying for an exam tommorow. But my mind has been taken off it now.

My dad gets home later from a holiday and I leave later tonight to go home.  " Hi dad, oh by the way your roof fell in... hope you had a good holiday...ok bye speak to you later "..

I am just glad my dogs were outside.

Possible causes

1: you are very athletic in the bedroom

2: You overdo it with the baked beans/curry

3: Your woodworms have been watching Fred Dibna on Sky

lol

1. Nope no luck there.
2. I do like curry but I was eating porridge for breakfast
3. My dad does watch alot of Fred Dibna, so this may be a explanation.

Sark,

you might feel at the moment as though the roof has fallen in on your life, however things can only get better, do not despair, leave it to your dad to repair.

Cheers Dewi.  Yea my Dad is one of those kind of people who can walk into the pub and get a team of volunteers to help. So I am sure it will work out ok.  It is crazy the amount of rubble and dust that is all over the place. It is even in the kitchen and hall.

yea Gryffles, I hope so..

Glad you're ok Sark.
This happened to me about 5/6 years ago and it really is rather scary at the time. We were settling down to play a home game, I'd just poured the drinks and we were getting ready to deal the first hand when we heard a horrofic noise coming from above and all but 1 of us threw ourselves towards the edges of the room. The whole ceiling came down, somehow none of it hit the person who didn't move and the rest of us managed to evade the falling bits as well apart from a couple of glancing blows from small pieces, no injuries.
Unfortunately a piece of ceiling about a foot across fell straight onto my solid oak coffee table and cracked it in half and the drinks were ruined, a bit annoying as they were made with a lovely vodka my russian friends had brought over for me the day before.
The real lucky aspect of it was that about a minute before it happened someone had complained about it being hot so my flatmate had left the room to turn the heating off. He'd been sat in the middle seat of the sofa with the table in front of him so it's unlikely he would've got out of the way. When the dust settled we saw the biggest part of the ceiling resting on the sofa exactly where he'd been sat.
The look on his face was priceless when he came back in wondering what all the noise was, he thought we'd knocked over the bookcase.
Not surprisingly we abandoned the game for the night and went to the pub where we got some very strange looks as 6 of us walked in coated from head to toe in a fine whit dust

Your dad's roof must be a very weak poker player - it folds too easily.

thanks

Yea gatso, I know what you mean about the white dust. The lady next door came across. She thought a bomb had gone off.

I have recruited a couple of people off the street. They are my clean up crew. I had never seen them before. But the promise of cash can persuade anyone to get too work. I gave them a hard hat each ( my dad has about 20 of them in the hall cupboard from work ). There was no way I am gonna get sued if some rubble falls on them.

Utmost respect for gettin the neighbours to tidy up whilst you are on blonde, why should a little thing like that interfere with your game :)up

lol.  No, most of the clean up is complete. I had a crew of skateboard kids who were suprisingly very hard workers. I think they have done this before. They worked like a bunch of frenzied ants. There were two pack leaders who bagged up all the rubble and handed it to the others to take outside. There is about 30 black bags sitting out in the front garden. It is just dust that is mainly there now and a bloody great hole where the ceiling used to be.

Under the circumstances, I think you may be excused (just this once!) the 50p fee for a bad beat tale.

Still, it could have been worse.  It could have been your house.
