What is a good draw in a $25k buyin tournament!?

Ram is down to 45k and I am down to 45k
Sammi Farha is down to 33k after losing with Aces to Lee Salem's 3 4 suited. Sammy flashed his cards before calling on the end and received a warning that he would get a 20 minute penalty next time. He obviously didn't get the read that the rest of us on the table got, he called 6k losing to trip 3s.

A player in seat 8 is our chip leader. I dont know his name but he is playing very well. Approx 80k !

any one of the other 59 tables ! and any other position on the 60th.

Any idea what the blinds are?

The blinds? Not sure, but they began at 50-100, & I'd say thery were in about Level 3 by now, so maybe, what, 200-400, 300-600?

Dave just rang again - he says the AA v KK v QQ Pot was over 200k.....!

My point was, how are pots getting so big with blinds that small?

They must be going for stacks early then, I suppose it doesn't matter too much if you're knocked down to 25K when blinds are still 300/600!  It would be interesting to know when all the money went in, must be reraise after reraise.

Well I think an AA v Kk would generate an all-in at any stage of any tourney. 2,000 starting chips, or 200,000.

The real reason that the AA v QQ v KK was so big, was because the QQ moved all in for a massive over raise of 12,800
The Aces then tried to put 20,000 in the pot, and was told he had to make it up to the minimum re-raise. He was an elderley gentleman who clearl had not played many tourneys.
I wasn't good enough to fold KK, so the only other option was to raise.
The pot was just under 200k.

When I peaked at 120k I would have been amongst the op 3 or 4 chip leaders and was determined to chill and only play quality hands/situations. I would have been thrilled with 120k at the end of day.

The Kings v Aces hurt.

My table was broke and I was moved to a new table with 25k.
I called 2000 (a raise before the flop) with 88 and liked the look of a  2c 8c Ts flop

Unfortunately my opponent was holding  Tc Td and I was walking out the door

KK v AA and set under set within an hour was tough stuff (especially in my biggest comp of the year). It is a long time since poker has made me feel this bad.

Wow I just got through reading this update and goodness gracious I can only add little ditto marks under what's been said.  The atmosphere must be amazing over there - only sorry about your double blow Dave... tough one.

It's been weird updating in Dublin knowing you blondes were out there in sunny(?) Vegas but glad to be updated after the return to London.  I recommend the New York New York rollercoaster if you want to forget your troubles for 2 and a half minutes or so...

I have a funny feeling Yongster might go deep in this 1.

OMG, I had 2 chats with DC today, one at 80k and the next at 120k, he was looking in great shape. I saw the JT v AT hand, how Robert Williamson lays down AT on a JTT board I do not know, he showed when he passed when DC moved all-in on the river, he had put 20k in the pot and had 28k left - what a class act he is.

What a tough day for DC, AA v KK and set over set - so sick, why does it have to happen in the biggest comp in the world?

Maybe it was karma, as when he was on £120k, he very generously pointed me towards a "juicy" 25-50 NL cash game that he has been slaughtering over the last 2 days........................and within 45 minutes I had lost 20k with flush v higher flush, set over set, 2 pair v set and got by AA cracked by KJ on a J high flop (cheers Dave, thanks for the tip).

I'll try and put some updates on tomorrow aswell at the breaks on when I'm out.






 

I had a great time, found  Kc Kd vs  Ahrt Ac and i lost the lot to the table bully who had 150k,( pot was 180k) dont know what to say, I hope i am never that good to fold kk preflop, always another day w/ a better possibilty.

I also chopped a pot of 140k that would ahave made me the chip leader about 1 hour earlier, i made a big raise preflop w/  7d 8h, flop of  5h 6s Qc, bet every street, tuen the  2d, river  9s, problem was Joe sebok also had  7c 8h

Unlucky to both of you KK into AA is a killer!

Tough break for Dave with the set over set and KK v AA but remember, this is a $25,000 tournament with 50,000 starting chips being played by the best players in the world. For two players to both get all their chips in the middle in the first few levels, they are generally both going to have huge hands. In this context, a pre-flop all-in with KK which gets called stands a greater chance of being in trouble. It's a similar thing (though harsher) when you flop middle set and it's behind.

Remember the JT v AT hand with Robert Williamson, no doubt he is bemoaning his 'sick beat' as well, and how Dave got lucky.

In a tournament of this stature, players will not put all their chips in the middle lightly in the early stages - the second best hand stands a much greater chance of not being good enough. None of which will be any consolation to Dave, of course.

Anyway, commiserations to the blondes who fell by the wayside yesterday and good luck to those who begin later today.

I just read Daves hand , maybe unlikely but it sounds to me as though the old boy knew exactly what he was doing raising to 20,000 to be told he has to double the all in bet of 12800 , having done that how could Dave put him on AA , smells like an AK that wants it heads up unless you figure in it was a move.

I remember a story about Johnny Chan throwing in a 5000 chip and saying he meant to put in 500 , when the bet stood the next player moved in and walked into Johnnys AA.

If there is one tournament in the world where you could throw away KK to an all in raise and a reraise this is it and Dave will probably agree , unlucky mate , it's a tough one to go out of , see you tomorrow.

Hi, its the break after level 2 and at least I'm still in, have 41k in chips, had an accident when I raised with  Qh 9h and the button called. Flop  Qd 9d 6h (nice), I bet 800, he calls, next card  2h (nice), I lead out again 1600, he flat calls. River  Kc, a very bad card vif he has TJ, like a donkey I bet 5k, he RR to 15k and I pass my top pair (he shows a Qs - WTF). What a donkey........... I have only won one decent pot all day and that was with 23 offsuit.

Qh 9h been a bad hand, I bet on the come every street and missed by flush. Not playing that hand again today.

Anyway, gotta get back, treally rying not to tilt, everyone is playing so tight and I cant get any chips............

Rob - No need to get chips so early in this tournament, i think it doesn't make much difference if you go into day 2 with 200k or 100k. i had a little look at the structure and its fantastic. No need to make silly plays or bluff unnecessarily.

It was a very tough day, I finished above average on 81k but laid down the best hand 2 times for £60k pots, these boys both showed their bluffs (I have AJ, flop AJK!!!!!!), I feel like I played very badly today by folding these hands, but as Mickey Wernick said "Rob, is this the best situation to put all your chips in ?", so I am on the new system.

Tomorrow, the blinds and antes are higher, which suits my game more, so my target is 200k or bust.

Absolutely not, no self respecting PRO should ever be seen with a BRA, In our experience BRA's tend to be somewhat restricted in their movements, where as a PRO is free to hang out anywhere in a cardroom :)

We were in fact due to go to Bellagio, it was all set up, but something intervened, & we went to Dublin instead.

Jen & snoops are the creme de la creme, but they were exhausted after Dublin, so we decided to give it a miss in the end.

Course, I regret it now!

Ben just texted me to let me know that he was up 50% on his starting chips, and finding it hard going.  How come that none of the American sites do decent updates ?  They do not seem to be interested in Non-American players !!

Myself, Chubby and Trumper arrived a few hours ago we are stil homeless because we have no room yet allegedly its been sorted but as Robs still in the comp we cant get it sorted, but never mind.

Tournement news so far the fontana bar is a players only area so we cant get in, as for the card room we have had a look around and Marcel luske has around 30/40k him and yong are the only peepes we can see at the mo.

As for Rob he's up to £170k after slow rolling Ivey with a button raise of AA ivey RR with 99 Rob then flat called and called all Iveys streets to an all in on the river, Simon trumper is giving him sound advice on reading players and for once Robs now in the zone.

As for myself after Chubbs got so much stick in Dublin about his DTD T shirts not fitting hes asked me for assistance in Railng him in the gym for a Cardio workout.
So thats where we are off to.

Playing 130k stack him a little more. Next time i raise it up to 5000 to play with  Ac Aspades... he plays with his chips and counts out 20000 to do it again. Instead he just calls. Flop 5h 9h Qd. I bet 14000. He calls.... turn  2c ... i bet 30000 .. he calls. River  2s. I check he moves all in. I wanted him to make a move as i felt i was ahead... but all in!!

What to do now? He has already bluffed massively a few times and got lucky! Well i called and he had  9c 9d. Anyone else and i could have passed!

VUL Ben. It sounds like he played the hand very well, but from the way he'd been playing it's very hard to get away from AA there. It's only a set that's beating you.

Just gone out.. JJ v KK. Only pocket pair I had all day. Had a marvellous table but no tools to work with. (One guy called for 50k on the flop with just a gutshot!)

Tony Bloom had 200k last time I saw him.

The Ambassador himself is still in, as is Roland De Wolfe.

Paul Maxfield was in but very shorft stacked.

You would have thought people would just grind it out with 50,000 starting chips not throw them around!

Its 2am in Vegas and I'm just about to go to bed after having a relaxing meal at Circo in the Bellagio. I played some really interesting hands today, not all well, but managed to keep it together in key situations rather than blowing up. I was a bit concerned when Phil Ivey was on the BB when I was on the button but luckily picked up AA on his BB, I decided to slowplay when he RR by min button raise and he fired every street and hung himself. After I knocked him out I had every reporter wanted to interview me about the hand but I didn't bother as any mug can win with AA on the button.

I changed tables 3 times and only really had 2 mishaps:

1. I slowplayed KK against the player who had bluffed me the day before when I had the AJ on a AJK board, only to let him catch up on the river for a 100k pot which took some momentum away.

2. I did a squeeze move v a UTG raise and a flat caller only to find the BB going all in with QQ. I had to call with my A7 due to "pot odds" (that old excuse for a bad calls) and did another 60k in that pot. Phil Helmuth said "is A7 a big hand in England" and that started off 2 hours of constant trash talk between us.

I asked Helmuth how much to come and "cut the ribbon" on Dusk Till Dawn's opening night,but after he told me he charges $50k, I told him we'd get Rob Varkoni instead as he was a bigger name in the UK. On Wednesday night, I had been for meal with Rob, the 2002 WSOP champ, what a real gent he is if not the most outgoing personality in the world!

I kept changing from loose maniac to ultra tight today, I think that was because I was so concerned with making day 3, and put the brakes on each time I felt myself playing too many hands and wasting chips. A total rock made a very strange call for his last 40k with 77 on a A93 flop when I pushed all-in with AQ, not sure what he thought he was beating?

Phil Helmuth was very unlucky today on my table. He lost 200k in 2 outers when he was slowplaying overpairs and each time called his opponent a Mother xxxxxx to their face, the Tournamant Director was called over, but Helmuth was given NO penalty, what a joke. He behaved disgracefully, and must have said "you mother xxxxxx" over 15 times to each player when they outdrew him. However, he just oozes class at the poker table, he and Eric Lingren are my 2 favourite players, they are fearles, and not scared to play flops with suited connectors and any 2 cards in position.

I had a very interesting hand with Helmuth..........I raised with KQ on his BB, he flatcalled (in fact he NEVER passed his BB once to me in the 3 hrs we played), flop KT9, he bets 8k, I min RR to 16k and he makes it 32k and I pass (he told me to be a man and stop betting like a pussy, charming). The thing is, these top players talk loose, but when they commit their chips, they are normally ahead, I am almost sure he had 99 to TT or QJ, and it was a hard laydown for me as I really wanted to bust him. I played a lot of pots with Helmuth and he won most of them, I knew he would pay me off if I hit the flop big but I kept missing and he just called by bluff bets down and milked me, sometimes with bottom or middle pair......class player.

I also had to laydown AdKd or a Kc3c6c to a tight player which made me feel sick, seems like a tournament of big laydowns, and I think the bad call I made in Dublin has affected my play over here. It would mean so much to me to get through tomorrow and into the money, I'm 56th in chips out of 205 people so in good shape. My table draw is fantastic, no big names and no one has me outchipped by more that 20k. Unless my table breaks early or I get a bad beat there is no excuse for not making the money, just got to hold it together and not do anything really stupid. Poker's not my profession but I want to do well tomorrow so badly.................

As for Phil, his antics there sound the same as I saw in Reno last year. He spent circa an Hour bad mouthing the player that Knocked him out - and that was at the table!! (No spectators were allowed in the card area) and nothing was done about him there either.

He is a great poker player though, no doubt about it.

there is no way Helmuth calls someone a "stupid mother xxxxxx" for effect, his trashtalk he does to pick up tells and intimidate people. For example, I played 4 pots on the trot with him and each time he asked me for a chip count! The guy just wantS to win so much, knows he is one of the top players in the world, and the "luck element" in poker really frustrates him.

The reason he gets a lot of outdraws is simple: He wants to have his cake and eat it when he gets a big hand so he slowplays every single time, which means he gets sucked out on more than ABC players, therefore he "thinks" he gets more bad luck, when in effect, its his "trapping style" that makes it look like he gets "more unlucky" that other people. For example, this is how he played AA.

He min raises on SB with AA, the BB RR with 99, Helmuth flatcalls. Flop K23, Helmuth checks, opponent checks, turn a K, helmuth bets pot, opponent flat calls, river 9, Helmuth bets pot, opponent RR, Helmuth calls immediatley - £200k pot!
He played JJ the same, and another guy spiked a 5 on the river to make his set, so he lost to two 2 outers on the river within the space of 30mins. However, this would not have happened if he had played ABC poker. I did try to explain this basic maths theory to him but he was absolutely adamant that he is just the "unluckiest poker player on the planet" - WHAT A MUG!

Hi guys, thanks for all the well wishes. Just gone out 150th or so, top 125 got paid I think so not ideal place to go out. i was card dead all day but took a big hit early on so i felt i needed to wait for a hand. level one cost 44k in blinds and antes so I knew i was up against it. heres the hands:

Level 1: I RR 30k with AK, and the BB moved all-in for all my stack. I passed and he showed KK. Maybe I should have took a shot here.

Level 1: I raised with QJ on button £15k, the small blind called and the BB went all-in. It was £45k to make the call, he showed me 88 when I passed, perhaps I should have took a shot here but i was worried about the SB, I felt he had I big hand and was maybe slowplaying me, so I passed.


Level 2: I raised with KQ in position V 1 limper (who was mixing it up). I put a £17k raise in, and he just flatcalled - trouble. He checked, I bet 30k and he moved all-in.

Level 2: A loose played raised and I moved in for my last 50k with 33. He dwelled and called for all his stack with TT. I was suprised he called. Even if he had A high he would have won on a 99442 board.

Overall, I would say I played great aggressive poker for 2 days, and "chocked" today, anytime anyone put any pressure on me with button raises or I was re-raised I bottled it. I never played back at the button once when he made repeated steal raises (I did really had bad offsuit hands such as J3 94 72 etc though) which is normally how I accumulate chips. I can't explain why I choked, I would normally call an all-in RR with QJ for only 1/3rd of my stack in a shot, and why pass AK (altough he did have KK).

Hung myslef to day I'm afraid, better to go out fighting than play weak passive poker. One hand there was 3 limpers in pot (22k worth of dead money) and found TT in the SB, I flatcalled cause I was worried the UTG limper had AA, KK. Turned out he had A7 suited, I would normally just move-in and take the dead money.

I think its interesting for players who have never played these events to read how a normally super aggressive player can lose his confidence and rock-up when the pressure is on. If you asked any of the 8 players who were at the table, I would think they would label me as a tight-passive player after the last 3 hours play.

Anyway, the beauty about poker is that there is always another prestigous tournamant the following month. When I was knocked ot the first thing I thought was that I QUIT, but now I have had time to review, I know that I can win one of these big events if I can make a few adjustments. I've had a lot of advice from people over here but the butterflies got the better of me on this occasion, I'm afraid.

Just because winning with an under pair is against the odds, it doesn't mean it wont happen, it means it WILL happen

He is one of the most succesfull internet players, has one EPT victory, one third place, and a runner up in the wpt. Inhis blog, Daniel Negreanu rated him one of, or the best limit player in the world. He is no joke...

It's truly amazing how guys like Antonius & Thewy appear to outdraw folks time after time.

But the fact is, they give themselves a chance to outdraw peeps by getting their chips in the middle, when most of us lesser mortals would hesitate.

And as they tend to operate with deep-stacks, they can afford to take chances.

Good luck to them I say. If I have Q-Q & they have 6-6, I WANT them to call, & if they bust me, well too bad.

I'd be delighted to see Antonius win it. His performance in Baden was nothing short of astonishing - arrived 5 hours late & won it in a canter!

When I was first introduced to Roland in Paris I told Jen and Tikay that he had the right attitude to win. Roland just plays the game to the best of his ability and does not get caught up w/ all the BS around him. Here's my take.

We should not C & P from other sites. We don't like it when it's done to us.

We are, & always will be, a site that believes in treating others as we would like to be treated. Fairly. I have nothing but contempt for those sites that copy our stuff & pass it off as their own. But that's a 2 way street.

What we CAN do, is disseminate information that's "in the domain". If you read in the Daily Telegraph that Brentford turned over Arsenal, you are fully entitled to tell your mates that. "I see The Bees stuck it up Arsenal again" kinda thing. If you see on ww.heresthenews.com that England beat Scotland again, you can openly & honestly spread that news. But you can't copy it.

So you CAN stick info on here that you read elsewhere. But bear in mind there's a right way & a wrong way to do it.

I'm obsessed with treating other Poker Sites fairly, & Dave is the same. I hope you understand.

Unlucky Roland great game and very well played. Will not come as much consolation for a day or two as i know you play to win but a fantastic result.

It is a great result - but I can understand the disappointment even if you walk away with over 1 Milllion.  But then it will hit the bank.......and it wont seem so bad!

Thats the downside to going all in preflop, it doesnt matter what you hold it can be beat and you are having to rely on luck.

If eight players have 5s 5h , 5c 5d ,  6c 6h ,  6d 6s ,  9s 9c ,  9h 9d ,  Jd Jc and Jh Js they are all drawing dead pre-flop to two guys with Ad Ac and  Ahrt  Qs

Surely the 2 holding JJ are still live - if the flop comes 10-Q-K with the case A on the turn?

Fortunately the chance of that happening with me are 0% as i play on the 9 handed tables on pokerstars!!  :D
