Title: How do you define a professional poker player? Post by: simonjjj on April 21, 2006, 02:50:37 AM What is a professional poker player? Is it someone who earns there living from poker? Someone whi plays a set number of hours? What? It seems more and more people are calling themselves "professional" poker players there days. I have a full time job yet i make more money from poker than i do in my job. Am i a semi-professional poker player? lol

Post by: byronkincaid on April 21, 2006, 10:49:21 AM It's interesting that if you define a pro poker player as being someone who solely derives an income from playing poker, ie no affiliate deals, no article writing, commentating or business on the side that kinda runs itself, there are very few people who would qualify.

"Poker Professional" covers a multitude of sins. Jesse May is a Poker Professional in my opinion, but he rarely plays. Diitto Marty Wilson. Ditto, if your imagination is vivid enough, me. But as to "pure" poker Pros, who earn their living at the table, not many. On the UK Live Tournament scene, I can think of two guys who probably earn a decent living - Thewy & Lord Wernick. Many scratch a living, but barely. In cash Games, well that's different. 50 or more earn a living "Live", & probably thousands do so Online. Poker is big business now, so many folks DO earn a living from the game "off the table". Title: Re: How do you define a professional poker player? The only problem with Tikay is he is too damm modest and deserves more recognition.

They are the exception though, as Tikay says there are very few who are on the UK circuit as most have a buissness to cover them. Funny that the 2 Tikay mentions both have a deal. Without a deal how long could they go before the small margain and high variance caught up! Personally i would say that the camel is someone who fits into that catergory but he makes a lot of dosh online. I can name 3 of these at Walsall off the top of my head, with 11 comps per week it is very possible for even the rockiest rock to make the money the required percentage of times to make a decent living. I have also seen a couple of these go bust chasing the "dream" during fessies etc. but the sensible ones stick to sats for the bigger comps or just the odd £300-£500 comp every few months. These PRO's tend to be well known at the live tournaments purely because they tell you they are PRO's as they stare you down with intense menace. I played at a table with one such pro named "STICHES" and the only reason I knew his name was because I could clearly read it on his heavily tattooed neck :D :D Title: Re: How do you define a professional poker player?
