Title: GUKPT Luton Day1a Live Update
Post by: TightEnd on August 12, 2010, 10:38:25 AM
blonde Poker is back at the GUKPT. Possibly on a one off basis, but we'll see

Please join Adrian "Rockstar" Gotch and myself from 2pm this afternoon for a live update of Day1a of the GUKPT Luton.

Luton is always one of the busiest stops in the GUKPT Series. Always in August, it occurs when everyone is back from their annual pilgrimages to the WSOP. Furthermore the location means it attracts the London and the national players. Satellite seat winners are plentiful and the locals come out in force.

I'm expecting 300+ runners over the two days.

Last year this was one by Richard Gryko and in prior years by Sam Trickett and Dave Clark

In no particular order

DTD for paying my costs

James Keys

GreekStein

Chip Prince

Stu Rutter

MPower.

Turny

Chompy

tikay

for all contributing to the costs.

Thank you to Carmel and team at Luton for letting us update.

Most of all, thanks to Rockstar. An update virgin, this will be quite a baptism. Furthermore I'll be leaving him to it at the weekend. Good luck sir!

GUKPT Luton also forms part of the DTD Road Trip

DTD held an Online and Live qualifier to send players to Luton, and we'll be following them over, hopefully, four days

Qualifiers from the Live Satellites were

Waheed Ashraf

Malcolm Muskett (Malc M)

Gurpreet Nagi  (FreeRollin)

Jonathan Grice (MPower)

Tasos Grigoriou

and from the Online Satellite

Matt Russell (EvilPie)

Graham Giles

Richard Turner

Harvey Butters

Paul  Noonan (Luther101)

Good luck to them all, and to Alex from DTD who has to chaperone that lot!

In the meantime, I'm off to clear the Inbox, and I'll be back from the venue before 2pm

Please post on here if there are particular players you would like us to follow, picture and talk to.

Sofia Lovgren, Sweden

I came across Sofia when she played the Irish Open in April and went deep. I think she played a lot of time with The Camel on his deep run in that.

There was much comment afterwards on forums as she is a former model who has been taken on by PKR (much like say a Becker or a Warne or a Caprice would be taken on by the bigger sites for marketing purposes first, poker ability second).

A very very very tight player, from memory

Graham Chompy Wheldon raises to 150 in the cut off and Willie Tann calls on the big blind

flop  9h 3c 4c

Willie checks, disinterestedly, his nose so close to the felt he could be half asleep. Oh, he is.

Wheldon c-bets 250 and Willie springs to life. Check-raises to 850.

Wheldon arches an eyebrow, without moving a closed fist from in front of his mouth

He calls

turn  Qh

Willie fires out 1,850

Wheldon tank folds quizzically, as if witnessing grand larceny. Which it probably is

I was sat next to Lovgren for a few hours (on same table as Thewy and Jen Mason on day 2). Random opens the button to 2100 (at 400/800 + 100). I pass sb and Lovgren 3-bets in the BB to 9k from a 19k stack. Button ships and she tanks, for ages.

I get up and am on the rail talking to someone. She's taking an age to act and I see her pass 99.

[ x ] Model
[   ] Convinced she's a pro.

Jon would know more than me but I think there are several effects at play

1. Economics/recession/bankrolls

2 Competition from major online series

3. Advent of UKIPT /crowded festival and series schedules

I am expecting 150 tomorrow, on the basis that Friday's fields are always bigger than Thursdays.

That would make the field 230-240.

A struggle compared to the first three years, but times are tougher and the competitive environment was different then

Nothing is as good without him, but he built solid foundations, & it'll be just fine.

Now here is a study in contrasts

On the left Luton player Alan "Basher" Gray. A geezer, connected to the boxing scene. Runs a market stall selling plants

On the right Richard Gryko. Not a Geezer. Not connected to the boxing scene. Doesn't run a market stall selling plants.

"Handsome" Paul Ephremsen

Paul is the owner of an advertising business, brand marketing that sort of thing. Very new economy, looked at the website once and it was full of buzz-words such as vertical integration, brand leverage and the like. Never catch me using these

Also big into the greyhound scene is Paul. I believe he is heading a consortium trying to get greyhound racing on our satellite screens nightly ("At the dogs" perhaps)

I met Paul once on top of the North Downs. We were both flying kites with our Kids. No use to anyone that, but hey, I'm updating not you

Alex from DTD is looking after her VIPs

She comes up to me and says

"You know that Scottish fella that Rob has some arguments with?"

Me, "Er......"

"You know, Ginger hair"

Me "Er....."

"Has Dogs, we would feed them scraps"

Me "Oh,Mick McCool"

"That's him, well I went up to him and asked him why we hadn't seen him recently. He replied "I'm banned""

Alex thought "Oh bollocks, thats him" and apparently the whole table stared at her like she was a "dumb-ass"

I think she needs some babysitting, personally

More importantly, Mick is on 25,000

Just trying to catch up on notes before the players return

I arrived back at Table 9 to see Tom Tracy push all in for 6,000 from the big blind on the turn of a

 Ad 8d 9d 9s board.

Pot size 5,000 or so

Neil Channing has 11,000 left (I would be guessing but raise in position, called by the big blind pre?)  and is heads-up in the pot with Tracy

Long long think, and folds showing  6d 3d

James Sullivan raises utg, McLean calls next to act

Heads up to a 10-9-K flop, 6nd 2 rainbow turn and river

Sullivan bets all three streets, gets set in on the river, calls

Sullivan K-K flopped top set

McLean Q-J off, flopped straight

Laurie doesn't play any more but accompanies his wife Rochelle to tournaments regularly.

Izzy? Not sure I know an Izzy.

David La Ronde gets it all in pre, raises, 3 bet, 4 bet all in and call, versus Michael Moore

Q-Q for La Ronde, Moore K-J (3 bet and call the 4 bet shove)

King high flop, Jack on the turn and La Ronde is done for.

Moore now chip leader, that was a 60,000 pot

La Ronde departed steam coming out of his ears at, wait for it, Fahrenheit 9/11

Mickey Wernick finds a hand to push with. Sam Grafton calls him in the cut off and Keith Johson in the big blind does too

flop  Ahrt 9d 7c

Johnson bets out into the dry side pot, Grafton calls

turn  5d Johnson, quickly all-in, Grafton sigh folds

Johnson flips  Ad 7d

Wernick  8d 8h

Jd on the river delivers the nuts for Johnson
