Title: Civilization VI I am an addict
Post by: Ironside on May 11, 2018, 05:29:22 PM
My name is Ironside and i am an addict, since 21st October 2016 i have logged 3571 playing hours.
Since my health hasn't been great in past few years i needed something to fill the time poker used too. So have been playing CIV VI nearly every day.
But despite this i have only achieved 40/191 of the achievements. This is mainly due to only playing Victoria (in vanilla) and Robert the Bruce (in R&F) normally on the TSL earth map that came with the DLC, and no mods.I also never normally finish a game as i start a new game when it gets to the stage i am about to win. I have still to dip my toes into an online game but will do one day. i play 50% of time on Immortal and 50% on deity (Immortal is more fun as you can still get decent wonders). I  and I am now playing on completing as many achievements i can over the next few months. First off i am going to complete all the achievements i can with Scotland, then England then will work through the other Civs.

I am going to try and blog my as a record of how i am doing not expecting many people to understand any of this but if anyone else plays CIV VI here let me know

just got achievement 41 built a colossal head next to a holy site with a temple, never normally do this as basically impossible to get a religion with vicky or bobby on TSL map unless i reduce the difficulty when the game is too easy.

going to try and do the WIN achievements without taking shortcuts and easy routes with wins as leader all done on Emperor or above.

I used to play Civ II when it first came out, and must have lost thousands of hours playing the game.  I dont dabble with computer games apart from Football Manager, but recently bought Civ V.    It still has that addiction quality to it!

I’ve been a Civ addict since the first one - I have about 800 hours on Civ 5.

Not got Civ 6 yet as was waiting for expansions and updates after I got badly burned with the botched release of 5.

I gave up the franchise after ii but bought 5 at a massive discount after it was finished being developed.  Again I played a large number of hours. Civ vi is a different gravy though after the first DLC it became less flake and after first expansion it's now too addictive

Bergeroo , I used to play AoE, total war and Civ loved them all but Civ has caught me recently I dare say in future I will get back on track with the rest

Newportlad, I keep buying the football manger series every year but I fail to finish a season

Lol it was on my mind too tikay !
Gaming ? I’ve never tried it
Well not strictly true a bit of mario carting n early space invaders
It’s big business though
Taking my dog around the local park there’s toddlers in the play  area but very few teenagers ?
My stepsons 26 n 29 are huge gaming players
My sister tells me her son is only happy when on his x box he’s 14-15 btw
Is it only me who feels they are missing out ?
Or was I retarded  because I was always out on a bike / motorbike / up to no good ?

I don't know what it is, and I'm inclined not to find out, as I don't have enough time in a day as it is :D

Good luck, Iron!

It's a turn based game, where you start off in the year 4000 BC with a nomadic tribe looking to settle. You find a spot to settle then need to research everything from mining and pottery all the way through to nuclear power and rocketry and more. A bit like risk where you start off in a certain area expand and strengthen then take out your neighbours and then conquer the world (either by culture, military strength, religion or science.

Its gaming from those without the dexterity of a magician pressing 300 buttons a second.  Its all about choosing the right path to grow,

Lautaro      Mapuche
Harald Hardrada   Norway
Genghis Khan   Mongola
Shaka      Zulu
Gilgamesh           Sumeria

was struggling to enjoy the game the way i set it up so made a few changes

Poundmaker      Cree
Montezuma   Aztec                      replaced with Tamar of Georgia
Lautaro      Mapuche
Harald Hardrada   Norway                   replaced with Chandragupta of India
Genghis Khan   Mongola
Shaka      Zulu
Gilgamesh           Sumeria                   replaced with Saladin of Arabia

also went back to immortal to make it challenging

But turn 344 i managed to win science with Scotland for 2 more achievements

now going back in time to a save i made in the game to switch to the cultural route to get that completed before switching leader Only 1:45 am and i am feeling better within myself than i have for a few days might play another 2 hours

will have a look at AoE as soon as i get this challenge sorted, If you have AoE for PC then you can add it too your steam for free, just type in the serial number. Works for all games got me alot of space on my desk throwing away the old discs also useful when discs scratch and get lost.

got 49 achievements finished now and i am going to go down the list of achievements on the steam page and stick to it (i hope)

next one to aim for is win any game as Frederick Barbarosa should be easy and quick with his powerhouse industry and military

I find that achievements really add to the enjoyment of games, they definitely give you something to aim for rather than aimlessly playing a game (I can hear tikay from here muttering something about playing any game is meaningless).

Never really got into gaming or achievement hunting on anything except the Xbox 360 / Xbox One consoles so only ever played Civilization Revolutions.

Did you ever look at achievment / game guide websites like this?  https://truesteamachievements.com/game/Sid-Meiers-Civilization-VI/achievements (https://truesteamachievements.com/game/Sid-Meiers-Civilization-VI/achievements) They're really useful for figuring out the tricker or more time consuming ones.  Although in the case of Civilization VI there aren't many guide on that site.

I was addicted to AoE 2 back in the day before I got into poker. That game is very deep and well balanced. There’s still a strong online community over 20 years after its release. I still watch pro games on youtube every now and then but I cannot let myself play again for fear of it’ sucking up my life.

while my health has been good i have have been out taking advantage and the great weather has been a boost too so civilization and poker are both on back burners

started off playing pokemon with my eldest nephew but he gave up while y younger nephews who live in a big city in englandshire went up to level 40

so over the past few weeks i started off trying to catch up with them and then found the game ingress 2 weeks ago much more adult game by the same people that make pokemon

so i have been combining them both as they both require me to get out and about its good rehab

will get back to global domination in civ vi and poker as soon as the weather turns

Title: The Circle of Life
Post by: Ironside on October 22, 2019, 05:55:37 PM
In April my Dad took unwell in May he was diagnosed with cancer and was taken from us in June. He was the chief cook in our household and therefore the kitchen was never adapted for my chair. My mother doesn't have the confidence to cook by herself so i have been doing most of the cooking using an Air-fryer and microwave aided when needed by my mother who uses the hob. We are waiting on getting the kitchen sorted so i can access hob cupboards and turn around. Tonight for the 2nd time in my life i cooked steak and chips was going to get mother to fry an onion but not really got the room for both of us in the kitchen at same time. Used 1 Air-Fryer for McCains over chips (experimenting with homemade) and another for the steak.
So my Steak was seasoned by Lea and Perrin Worcestershire sauce and accompanied by chips and a slice of wholemeal bread and butter.

I am kinda proud of this effort. Just 6' of sirloin cooked to medium rare a nice even cooking slightly pink the whole way through.

so its been 14 months since i last posted on this thread life has gone round in a circle since then, I really got into the game ingress going from newbie right through the levels and was on target to get to the highest level but the middle of November this year. I was out every evening and some weekends out for 14 hours a day.Great game where to do anything you have to be in a location. I was feeling better than i had in over a decade and things we looking up. Went to Perth on the first Saturday of April where members of both sides of the game met up for bonus points and a few pints. (3 hours on a train each way). And i was making plans for going to all the first Saturday events. My Dad's short and sudden illness took me and the family by surprise. Just 5 days after my Dad's Funeral my neighbour who was practically a member of the family and came out with us every week for dinner suddenly past away hitting my mum hard. We are now getting back to a routine my has finally got back to her line dancing and bowling. And i am back on the waiting list for 2 operations i was mistakenly taken off of recently. Ingress has been put on a back burner occasionally getting out to play but most of the time just just too tired of an evening and not wanting to go out driving. So the circle of life has taken me back to playing Civilization VI and Fm2019 where i have Robert the Bruce taking on all comers, and taking Lossiemouth from the Highland league to Champions League glory.

You are a bit of a GOAT Alistair, thanks for the update.

WTF are "Ingress", "Civilisation VI" & FM2019"? The last one sounds like a radio station.

Sounds like a real tough year, but, as usual, & like our other forum ledge, Reece, you battle through. Top man you.

PS - the meal looks nice, but a little piece of advice - it's better to cook the steak.

Ingress is an augmented reality mobile game developed and published by Niantic for Android and iOS devices. The game first released on December 14, 2013 for Android devices and then for iOS devices on July 14, 2014.
Sid Meier's Civilization VI is a turn-based strategy 4X video game developed by Firaxis Games, published by 2K Games, and distributed by Take-Two Interactive. The latest entry into the Civilization series
Football Manager 2019 is a football management simulation video game developed by Sports Interactive

Ok what have i miss typed and where? the steak was definitely cook to medium to rare standard just a nice hint of pinkness when cut into.

We had the shipwrecked carcase of a roast chicken in the fridge. I managed to salvage a more or less intact thigh and I put it in the air fryer for about 5 mins on full power.

It came out all crispy and delicious. Will definitely repeat.

Air fryers rule.

yeah very sustainable i will nick them out the saw mill which is less than 100 yards from my house as the crow flies, they restock the mill loads of times every day
our electricity is produced by putting a plug in the wall i have several dozen of them scattered round the house with multiple adapters in them to allow me to power up an endless number of devices

Civ VI was given away for free this weekend so I got it and I am playing. Seems a steep learning curve. Just figuring out what to do. Playing as America so far. Had a wore with Greece and took two cities but then declared peace. Now my objective isn't military I am a bit confused. I will watch some tutorials.

Any recommendations for which leader to pick for a beginning player??

Do you decide which kind of victory you are going to go for at the start of the game or do you see what develops?

I specialise in playing Scotland this way I get used to the bonuses and dont get them mixed up. Every now and then I will try a new leader but then end up playing how I would as Scotland but pick a leader on the type of game you want to play. No point picking kongo for religious game. In the early versions of the game I used to like Victoria for her expansionist traits

I started playing this mate during lockdown, used to love Civ2.

Can't say my hours match yours but its such a great game and levels are so deep.

I just do random leader etc so i'm not always doing the same thing. Religious route seems so fucking tedious though, culture/science/domination way more fun.

I have played Sid Meier's Civilization V long time ago. Is this one much better and do you guys recommend it?

I loved civ v but after playing 11k hours of civ vi I tried to play some civ v but it wasn't as good as I remembered,  only thing u can recommend  though is makes sure you have the expansion  packs as the vanilla game feels like it's not a finished game

I agree, the expansion makes it so much better!

I started playing this mate during lockdown, used to love Civ2.

Can't say my hours match yours but its such a great game and levels are so deep.

I just do random leader etc so i'm not always doing the same thing. Religious route seems so fucking tedious though, culture/science/domination way more fun.

yeah religion is a ballsache the micro management is a bore i did it once just to get the achievement i am now close to 7000 hours according to steam

Nice to see Civilization 6 fans here :) I also play.
I can tell you that the religious path is the fastest way to win the game. On the God difficulty I won on religion. All the other ways to win are not so easy to get on high difficulty.

So much time? I didn't count my time as I reinstalled the operating systems and the game too. But I think I have less time :)

Hello civ fans.

Have any of you payed multiplayer? I have never given it a go because every is too good online and would crush my soul. Also yoo many rules.

Could we get a little game going maybe?

hey there LTNS, i have never played Multi player i havent actually played a single game since Feb after logging up 15k hours of play since launch. I would love to set up a multiplayer game. Been invited to a few through civ vi facebook group[s but never taken anyone up on offer due to fact i would get hammered as its a totally different way to play.

Went to APAT last weekend. Logged in to blonde to check when my first blonde bash was. Next thing I see Ironside posting about my little side addiction also. Some kind of fate.

On why was I absent? Let's call Blonde a previous addiction. One of those rabbit holes a little rabbit like me cannot resist.

Yeah and they use better balance game. Totally different rules.

We could do play by cloud/email. That way it's just a normal game and not synchronous turns. But it would take a long time to complete.
