I have post xmas battery hell, please help.

I have a battery block for a device, it takes 4AA

There is a pos and a neg terminal outslde the block

the neg comes in series from one battery only

the pos comes from 3 batteries in series

shouldn't all 4 batteries be connected in series in the block?

when I ammeter test the terminals of the block there is no voltage with batteries in situ, even though they are good batts, and the 3 set and the one set show voltage
