Poker Forums / The Rail / Re: What are the chances?

Hey there. I'd say the chances were roughly the same as going in to a small local's bar in the Austrian alps with 25 people in fancy dress and the owner holding up his phone while you're all singing 'show me the way to amarillo' cos it turns out the owner is Tony Christie's cousin, and that's who he was on the phone to!!!!
We didn't manage to get a headsup game of drinking poker going, but not without trying first... problem was they only had Austrian cards in the bar... poor excuse I know.
What a mental night that was! So did you make it out on the slopes at all then Flushy or were activities purely confined to what you're best at?

Poker Forums / The Rail / golf n poker - thx rugrat

A while back we had a post inviting all blondes to a golf and poker day in surrey. I duly signed and up was suprised to be the only blonde there when i arrived for the day. It was held in camberley and had an excellent format whereby you earn you tourney chips for the evening by scoring points in a stableford golf competition. Every missed putt, every sliced drive, every topped approach costs you 100 chips - great stuff if you love both games.
The golf day was fantastic, camberley heath gc was a pleasure to play on, and everything went very smoothly. I did OK and came in to the with a slightly above average starting position. I had the good fortune to play with spineynorm (norman pace) who some of you may know. The tourney was held in the golf club and we all settled down to the poker after a great meal. By complete coincidence i was sat next to a chap who plays at my own club on the other side of london. With 58 runners and a bigger buy in that I'm used to I knew my work was cut out, and after a real rollercoaster ride and managed to do OK and take a bit of cash home.
Anyway I wanted to let you chaps know how well run and enjoyable everything was. Rugrat (Tony Cooper) organised the whole thing and did an excellent job, so big thanks to the man, a true gent. I do hope that we'll see some more events coming our way, so if they do make sure you sign up next time!!! It was tough work holding my own against a field of bad beat forum players!
Cheers,
Joe

what a laugh, i knew this would get some good chat... I'd just like to add my bit and say thanks for the quiz... not because it was good, but because it was so bloody hard that there was no point in trying to think of the answers - this made my hangover a lot easier to live with. I don't know what I would've done if there were any questions genuinely worth thinking about hehehe

I enjoyed the read, but boy does that guy big himself up or what!!!! Fascinating story, but do you really believe it all? I haven't researched it much so maybe it is supported, but with a fresh pair of eyes I thought the guy was a bit narcissistic. Good fun book though....
And to answer the question... I'm not too sure I believe it's possible... but I have an appointment with a gastroenterologist soon so I'll ask!

I hate this kinda situation, very tough for me to play - i usually fold and feel weak by doing so.
A few things lead me to folding - the min raise UTG means to me that he's more likely to have a mid pair and has hit trips, he's got the AA and is playing it in the 'classical' harrington way, or he's got something like 9T or 78 suited - i.e. he's hit the hand pretty big - much less likely that he's got AK / AQ / AJ as the min raise would be odd from UTG imo. Secondly, he knows you're gonna end up seeing his hand as you've got the all in player still in, so he's less inclined to bluff at this.
I think it's more likely he's beating you than not here - chance he's got the two pair after playing his 9Ts is less than chances he's tripped up or has the straight, so I'd probably relunctantly fold and grimace when he shows 74o. You've still got over 5k to play with so you're not out of the running by any means.

why is declaring your hand against the rules?
and re the 'announcement', whilst it's pretty clear he was implying he had QQ, he could also have AK - that's also a bit of a dog to KK / AA, but a coin flop against the other big pairs.... just illustrating that you can't define rules around the implication of hands as there aren't many clear cut situations
I'd like to hear from the big opposers as to why they don't like it. imo it'll bring a nice element in to the game, and if anything it'll give the better players another edge and more of a chance to read their opponents - he says he has AA... does he really? is he bluffing? As i said, I think it's all part of the game. You try to mislead opponents by acting strong when weak, or strong when strong etc etc, why not take it a step further. what exactly is the harm? What you clearly can't do is expose the cards, but anything else.... no probs.

just like to add that the BB being offensive is out of order, but I don't think what the SB said was unreasonable at all... he wished the guy luck if he had AA or KK.... doesn't mean he has to have QQ does it?

i really don't see what all the fuss is about - poker is a game of deception (amongst other things) and it's all part of the game imo. I personally think you should be able to say whatever you want to win the hand (with exception of abuse), tell him your hand whether real or not, just chat away... makes it more fun! I love that side of the game. Otherwise, where exactly do you draw the line - you end up with situations like this where there can be no clear ruling...
