Changed the introduction to more accurately reflect where my PhD is heading. It's taken on a slightly more distinguished course over the past half year.

Hello,

My name is Daniel Kardefelt Winther, I am a PhD student at the Department of Media and Communications, London School of Economics.

In most internet-related research today, "internet use" is treated as a one-dimensional activity, while most of us who use the internet knows that this is not the case. Internet mediates many different activities and users interact with different platforms in different ways, for different purposes, reaching different outcomes (both positive and negative). This survey is the main data collection for my PhD. It will ask questions about your online poker playing, your thoughts and feelings about playing and not playing, some questions about possible negative or positive outcomes of your playing and also some questions about you. For those of you who are Facebook users there will be an opportunity to answer questions about this platform as well should you wish to do so.

The survey can be found here, and is expected to take about 10-15 minutes:

If you have any questions at all about the project or my survey, please do not hesitate to contact me:

Best regards,

Daniel

The resulting data will be used as a basis for my PhD. I aim to show that there are differences in how people engage with different online platforms both in terms of what they use them for, but also in the subsequent outcomes. I am not focusing on the negative aspect, rather I tried to incorporate a balance of positive and negative outcomes as these are important for comparative purposes. Only talking about what people do is not quite as interesting as if you can relate it somehow to outcomes, although I do by no means aim to discuss causality, rather tendencies.

No no, no virus...this is a very innocent survey. Smiley
And well, it has my name attached to it...so I could expect angry visitors if I did something fishy Sad

Keyloggers and such are really ruining the process of online data collection, I have to say.

Also: This is by far the most responsive and active forum I've visited, I very much appreciate all the responses I get from you guys Smiley

Does it ask for my username and full tilt password?

Because you can have those.

Well, no. Right now I am more interested in your thoughts and opinions about online poker Smiley

Sorry, bad industry joke!

Survey finished, good luck with the results and Phd.

FYI, I thought the social media section missed identifying people who are spending a percentage of their time on work related online activity as opposed to wholly personal.  If that's a variable you're interested in of course.

I am very interested in this variable, though perhaps more on a philosophical level than for the purposes of this survey! I think it's a difficult variable to measure for, considering how pervasive and integrated internet use has become in modern society. For example, I check my work-email quite consistently even if I'm gaming....does that make my internet use personal or work-related? Or both? Or neither? It raises the very interesting question of whether we should even attempt to classify online use....difficult to crack that one Smiley
