First and foremost..CALL FOR A RULING.
There are too many players that try to sort things out themselves and in some cases draw the wrong conclusion.
There have been occassions when, with the TD present, 2 players check down a hand to eliminate a player and at showdown the last player to act has the nuts. When confronted with the question,"why didn't you make a bet?" the response has been... "I went blind and didn't look at my cards." (yeah, that's convenient)
Another scenario, is too many Card-rooms don't insist on SHOWDOWNS whenever both players have checked the river or when a bet is called on the end. If this is not enforced, this also can lead to sharp practise.
Of course there are still many card-rooms that don't have strong direction from the card-room. Too many casinos' still view the competition as, well let's get it over and done with so the croupier can be put on roulette or blackjack. Usually these are the ones where the players tend to give up on a ruling an sort it out in the car park.

Poker Forums / The Rail / Re: Tournament Prize Structures
|

My answer is a combination of both.
Flatten the % but keep the 50%+ difference between 1st and 2nd and ensure 10% of the prize for 4th.
Pay more places; as I know of many players that make final tables; top 5 get paid in a 60 runners event and are doing their brains.
By keeping the 50% difference,(ideally no more than 50% of the prize pool between 1st and 2nd), you offer a carrot that would make a good win worthwhile.
Deal making, as previously mentioned. is always an option as it's the players themselves who are putting up their own money.

Late entries are allowed through-out the rebuy period or the 1st 2 levels of a freezeout.
1. A player buys in before entries are closed. Goes off to work. Their stack is left on table and only the small and big blind is posted as they can miss as many hands as they wish. If a table breaks, their stack goes onto a new table, and continues to post small and big blind..until their chips have gone or the player sits down to play.
2. Say a comp starts with 47 runners. The card-room sets up 5 tables, 2 tens and 3 nines. There are 3 empty seats available. The comp has been running for 15 mins, a player arrives late who hasn't yet bought in. They are placed in one of the empty seats, forfeiting the current small and big blind. If they are placed in the big blind, they have to post their big blind as well. They get cards and play their hand as normal.
3. Freeze-outs operate the same way. However some card-rooms may calculate reduce yr initial stack depending how late you are.

This is how I feel so far:
1. During the re-buy period, normally 90 mins, if a player arrives after 45 mins or so, they are at a disadvantage. They have no info to work with, how the others got their chips and invariably will not have too much choice but to add-on at the end. In a freeze-out, the advantage swings more towards a late arrival. The blinds are still small compared to their stack, the biggest stack at worst would have only doubled up. It goes against the principal of basic tournament play where there is now no benefit of knocking someone out.
2. I would go someway and agree with the post's that suggest a bigger forfeit than just a small and big blind. On the lines of an extra 15 mins chip calculation. This more so in a freeze-out.
3. I feel there's nothing wrong with a player missing as many hands as they wish. It's probably to there disadvantage in some way. Although I remember Aces Simon Trumper quadrupling up on the first hand and disappearing to the bar for an hour or so.

Poker Forums / The Rail / New Card-Room Rules.
|

Trying to get a view on the new card-room rules that are in place.
1. Late Entries. Any player can arrive during the whole period of re-buys or first 2 levels of a freeze-out. Is this an advantage to a player? or disadvantage to the other players?
2. On being entered the player forfeits a small and big blind immediately. Is this sufficient? Should there be a bigger forfeit?
3. Players can leave the table for as long as they wish, only paying small and big blind on their turn. Is this fair on the other players? Should there be a bigger forfeit?
Thanks
Nick

Just reading through the threads, the card-room applied their new rules correctly with reference to not opening a new table after registration had closed.
I would say though, I would not have gone 11 handed for any reason and would always attempt to set up 8 and 9 handed for all competitions. The comp could then close registration and start on time.
There is no Guideline 3 anymore. This gives the casino the opportunity to use the new rules where appropriate.

Nice one.
It was forecast that some of the croupiers would get well oiled, why change a habit of a life-time.
Now we can fraternise with customers as well, bring it on!

Not sure if any one else has done so yet..
Went to the Plymouth Grosvenor yesterday afternoon for the 50 freeze-out.. this was significant as i actually work for the Stanleys Casino in Torquay..
I had to declare my occupation, (Card-room Manager), was warmly welcomed.
At last progress in the right direction...it now means I can enjoy my profession and play poker as well!

Don't forget,
Torquay held the Golden Sands last week.
Players need to re-charge their batteries and/or lick their wounds. Special promos are the order of the day.
Gone are the days, even though the venue is excellent, the players will not just turn up without a carrott or two.

Thanks for the post.
Will the the comps be dealer dealt? (Important if you are looking for ranking points).
I'll be there as long as they let the croupiers in! (Allowable from September onwards).

Nice report Ralph.
There was a little confusion on the way i'd framed the prize money. I had originally planned to play down to two tables of 9..felt the event was better served with 2 tables of 10...not my best decision.
Will be changing the table balancing from shortest stack to moving the big blind. Very well justified by you guys.
Cracking atmosphere, i'm used to playing on the other side of the table..will again come September..best of bothe worlds!!
Thanks once again,,great ro meet you all.
Until the next time.

|

Card-rooms will be in more demand.
Guideline 3 the thorn in their side will be no longer. This means the casino can advertise their card-rooms (and other wares), with a variety of special events, even 24/7 if they want to. They can make up different events without the gaming board shadowing their every move. The gambling commission are a different animal.
In many cases, most casinos' will be card-rooms with the option to play roulette or blackjack if you like!
Most card-rooms will need to link together to offer and gain a wider range of audience.

Ask for a chop.
Explain that no doubt you'll all be in similar position in another comp, situations reversed, so although your gonna get the best of it this time, it will even out over the long term.
If they laugh at you, and deride you, then play on, when you double up twice laugh at them.
or,
If you need the cash ask for a monkey and finish the comp there and then.
