I should have mentioned, Service Pack 2 contains a lot of those critical updates that Mikky mentioned, which is why it cuts out those annoying popups.

Your PC must be pretty old; most PCs these days come with SP2 already installed; haven't seen a Messenger Popup in the last couple of years!
