The most interesting nickname I have come across was an American gent from Alabama named Randy Erdhart.
We were in the middle of a poker game whilst on an oil job in Africa and his friends repeatedly referred to him as D.F.  Knowing the Americans habit of calling guys by there initials and knowing that this guys initials were not D.F. I asked what it stood for. There was a bit of sniggering and then a quick change of subject and the matter was dropped.
A couple of weeks later in the bar, I got into conversation with Randy, who was well on. It turns out that Randy had graduated with top marks from Alabama State in civil engineering, his marks to this day having never been bettered.
He was also a collegiate middle distance champion winning the Gold and silver medals.
After leaving college he joined the U.S. army’s engineering corp. serving with great distinction and winning three awards for bravery, two of which were when under fire.
After listening and being greatly impressed I brought up the subject of D.F. again. His reply
“I’ve got one of the greatest minds in the Southern United States, no one ever mentions it!
I was such a good athlete that my coach believed if I hadn’t joined the forces I could have been an Olympic medal, no one ever mentions it!
Three goddamned medals for bravery I have, one of them a purple heart! Does anyone ever mention, Oh no!
Yet I ride one lousy little daschund when I’m 16 and I’m known as Dog F**ker for the rest of my life.”

Good night all!
