If its direct debit rod you don't need to wait for the optician to refund you. The bank is responsible for refunds on direct debits and if you say they have been claimed in error the bank will refund you immediately and claim the money back themselves. This is one of the main differences betwen DD and Standing Orders.

Correct, they will refund if it is taken in error - ie you have not authorised it.

But in this case, the origional DD WAS authorised, so unless he cancelled the origional one, it is NOT the banks fault and so they will not refund you. You will have to get it from your optician.

Oh, and I check my near enough every day!!

It was not authorised (I've got to the bottom of it now) - it wasn't even in my name - it's my ex's from when we closed the joint account - they moved every other one right, except that one - they still shouldn't have been paying it as it was in another name, with another account no!!

Tell me it will take 'a few days to check it' - but they can hit me with charges instantly.

I’m the IT manager for a bank I would rather not name. When we transferred the file with all the customer statements from one system to another for printing all the pound symbols got translated into dollar symbols. This had been going on for two and half years and only last week a customer noticed it for the first time.

EDIT: Or could be botherd to report it.

On a slight tangent, I worked for a publishing company back in the day. Due to a printing error, one of the pages of a particular book got printed twice, so that the page order went something like 460, 461, 461, 463. A reader contacted us wondering if we could send him a copy of page 462.

A year and a half after it was printed.

He was the first person to notice.

That'd be a misread.

It was a book about trains. Tikay was the only purchaser of said book on trains. Page 462 was an image of a very rare steam engine and only a few photographs of this engine are in existance.
