This does sound possible, I drove around europe with an external GPS Bluetooth receiver that linked via the bluetooth to a laptop that then showed your position on microsoft autoroute europe.

It even tells you how fast the car was going - very impressive.

This is a link to a list of GPS receivers I found on the net. (not bought from here before but gives an idea of what is avaiable) http://www.handtec.co.uk/section.php?xSec=27

Not sure about the best PDA - map software thing.

You can buy a Tom Tom kit that fits with your PDA. I used to have one and I had all number of problems with it and stopped using it because it was a pain. I've since bought a Tom Tom one which is top notch and I can't recommend it highly enough.

search mininova for TomTom5 or TomTom6 and then download. Then search ebay for a 32 channel GPS Bluetoth receiver - should be about £20

You will need at least 100MB of memory for TT5 and a bit more for TT6.

A colleague in work uses his PDA for this. He has a separate GPS receiver, which connects to the PDA, and the software installed on his PDA, which I believe is available to download on tinternet.

I will ask him this week, and get back to you, thats if you need any more info. But I guess it's all on Ebay anyway.

Does your Palm include Bluetooth? If so you'll need a Bluetooth GPS receiver and some routing software. If not, you'll need a wired receiver to connect to the Palm.

Pukka route: TomTom do the UK software + receiver for £137 or the software only for £69. You can slightly undercut these prices by buying from reputable dealers on eBay.

Not so pukka route: As Nemesis says, buy a receiver from eBay. Make sure it has a Sirf III chipset - older ones need a clear view of the sky to lock on to the satellites whereas my Sirf III-capable Globalsat BT-338 locks on when it's in the glovebox. I managed to get mine for £35, lots available around £50-£60. Then download the TT software from your favourite file-sharing resource and away you go. TT5 with the GB map takes up about 140Mb of my SD card.

Check out the forums at www.pocketgpsworld.com for much more info, although they don't like questions about hookey software....

Now, what we really need is a POI file of UK card rooms  Grin
