Deus Ex is still the finest first person style game I've ever played, and one of the few games I'm tempted (at various times) to replay.
It's the story that hooked me, genuinely intelligent stuff.
Half Life was good, but I really liked what Deus Ex did with the character-customization.
And also with the plot - I've always though Deus Ex would make a great TV series.
The point where you discover where MJ12 is was one of those 'Whoa' moments.
And of course Deus Ex's esteem is made even greater by the huge, crushing disappointment that Deus Ex: Invisible War was.
I played the first level of Invisible War and it didn't grip me, I guess a lot of people felt the same way. Keep meaning to give it another go, but somehow it never happens...

It's like Fisher Price Deus Ex. Levels are all either indoors or in yards (with high walls so the graphics engine doesn't have to draw anything more than 100 feet away) and have about 4 rooms in them. Generic ammo. It's all too obviously a console port.
Story wise it's not too bad - not as good as the original but enough to hold interest. There's a nice parallel story with the coffee shops.

"Fisher Price"...
I remember the generic ammo, from a game standpoint it's awful, yet annoyingly it makes so much sense within the world DE constructed that I couldn't really get angry about it
I'm sure one day I'll get around to having a bash at it, I have the 'completionist' gene unfortunately...

Deus Ex was fantastic. I played it a few years after it came out and was still in awe of it. I can't rate it as highly as Half Life which was possibly the best game I've ever played, but it was a truly superb game. Multiple ways to achieve the same ends and a lot of different angles to approach the problems from.
I read the reviews of Invisible war and realised it was going to tarnish the DE name so didnt bother to get it.
They should have got ginger to design the levels. She would have loved that.....

I very much enjoyed Half-Life, but certain things always get to me when I play games like this. Like, where does Freeman keep all these guns he collects? In Deus Ex if you want to pick up a rocket launcher you have to drop half your inventory, and it's almost never worth it because there's guaranteed to be another way to get around whichever huge security bot is in your path (such as sneaking around it, using the "cloak" ability or just a well-timed grenade).
Even in Far Cry, you can only pick up four weapons (although it still feels silly when you're forced to trade out a machete for a rocket launcher).
I liked Half-Life a lot, but Deus Ex is still the daddy.

Stalker has a good system. Everything has a weight, and you can only safely carry 50kg of stuff. If you go over that then you tire very quickly and lose the ability to sprint.
