But when I enter  'ipconfig' in to "run"  it will show on my screen for a split second then dissapear,  Any ideas what i need to do?

MS_DOS stands for Microsoft Disk Operating System. It's the building blocks that run the machine, Windows is just an easy way to use it.

I can only assume that a Dos window is opening to run the task and then closing when it is completed. I am not sure if Vista has this but see if you can open a Dos window THEN use the ipconfig command.

Disclaimer, I'm very much an amateur, others are more likely to give better help.
