While i can see why the troops wouldn't want some c-list celeb following them round with a camera crew while they are risking their lives. Fair play to Ross Kemp for going out there as its not exactly easy street is it.

I caught the programme the other night and it serves a purpose in highlighting what some of our troops are going through. Getting paid below average wage to risk their lives, living in crap conditions. I must admit to watching it thinking "why the hell are they out there", what purpose does this serve.

There is no way i would do what they are doing, you could pay me 10 times their wages and i would be like, nah i like my life, cheers.

Very true M8, and a lot of the troops are asking the same thing. However, even more to their credit that for most of them they just get on with it. Obviously I am a huge supporter of our troops but firmly believe we were taken there this time around by a very deceitful government, who lets face it only agreed to our troops being there to court favour with our "Ally" America (The same country who have killed as many our troops in Iraq & Afghanistan as any other.)

Darren tends to watch this. I have a question, not too sure if it has been raised b4, but, how come he wears a Blue helmet and blue body shield, when the rest of the troupes are in desert wear? Surley his stands out.

  Just watched the latest episode(4/5) which dealt with the death of three soldiers due to friendly fire,what seems to have happened is that an airstrike by american pilots landed short and was responsible for the deaths, and several other injuries.
  What happened next quite surprised me as it showed the lads attitude towards the pilots which i presumed would be hostile,however whilst mourning there fallen comrades its was respect for the job of the usa airforce that was shown and understanding of what a difficult task they undertake everyday.A  real appreciation was shown as the troops explained how many times they had been supported and helped by these pilots to get them out of life threatening situations during other missons.Then the troops went on to explain there disdain for the headline grabbing british press which use these incidents for one reason only,that being to sell papers(a real sense of disapointment and hatred of the way it was handled by the journalists).
  I have always had respect for our armed services and this series has only heightend my appreacition of what these sometimes riduclously young men go through.

Hi Mo,

All civilian media personnell wear these to identify themselves as non combatants, doesn't always protect them though. A bit like the medical services use the red cross.

I assume it's still the case that the RAF pilots (similar to the Dutch ones) can only do so many hours during the day, whereas the Yanks will fly however much is required? (And I take it they still take their "stay awake meds" to erm..stay alert?)

too much cloud, not enough cloud, too windy, not windy enough, too much rain, too much sand, too sunny, not sunny enough, enemy have weapons, its dangerous, no hotels nearby...

Yes I understand that, but what I meant is how much it stands out, I thought the idea of the different uniforms were so the troups could blend in to the surroundings easier , but this must only help the enemy locate them.

Yes I understand that, but what I meant is how much it stands out, I thought the idea of the different uniforms were so the troups could blend in to the surroundings easier , but this must only help the enemy locate them.

It's one of the reasons why my 1st post alluded to the increased dangers to our troops when these guys are attached to them. The gear stands out, as does a f%* off big Camera and microphone.

It's shouting to the terrorists........."hey come and attack us and get lots of free press whilst you're at it" hate to think how many soldiers were injured or killed by a hasty attack on them created by the presence of TV cameras.

Just watched the last episode of what was an absolutely superb series.. truly brought home the environment and circumstances that these guys have to endure whilst fighting for their country.

Moving, uplifting and powerful all at the same time... the gallows humour of servicemen was also evident, when one of the guys who was injured met up with his comrades on their return to the UK, he said "Im owed money, I couldnt die" then when asked what he remembered about being injured  he said " I fell asleep in Afghanstan, and woke up in Birmingham... it took a while to notice any difference" LOL


Clear the sideboard Mr Kemp, this series will win an absolute shit load of awards and plaudits... AND RIGHTLY SO !!
