absolutely ,dont forget holdem is a high card game. if he hasn`t hit u get nothing anyway.how can he catch up without beating you?

I'm still struggling to work out how or why I played this hand like I did. I truly butchered it.

I think I checked the turn to let him value bet/bluff the river but anyhow I shoulda bet. Just terrible play.

why did u check the turn?

If you're going the check the flop, you have to bet the turn...

I don't mind checking the flop as there is a player behind you, but so many hands villain might have are going no-where, so raising probably best option...
