My dad was a huge Jimmie Rodgers fan. When I was a little boy he was always singing snatches of Jimmie's songs.

I must have lerned them parrot fashion, because even though I've never heard Jimmie sing them (until now) I know all the words.

If you're so inclined, take a listen to"Wating for a train" (First song)  and "T for Texas" (aka "The Blue Yodel") which starts about 6 minutes in. Great lyrics.

I wish I had found this clip while my dad was alive, he would have loved to see it. Oh I know it's corny now, but in his day, Jimmie was the man.

Listened to that and thought to myself that sounded like it must've influenced the Proclaimers, and did a wee googling and found this.

Yes. I did a bit of googling myself, and the people who list him as an influence include such notables as Elvis, Bob Dylan and Buddy Holly.

he was the very first inductee into the country music hall of fame, which is a fascinating place to visit if you like that kind of thing.

Just found this: The Coo Coo Bird

apt lyrics for a poker forum.

Gonna build me a log cabin
on a mountian so high
So I can see Willie
as he goes on by

Um hmm hmm...

Oh the coo-coo is a pretty bird
She wobbles when she flies
She never hollers coo-coo
'Til the fourth day of July
I've played cards in England
I've played cards in Spain
I'll bet you ten dollars
I'll beat you next game

Jack of diamonds, Jack of diamonds
I've known you from old
Now you've robbed my poor pockets
Of my silver and my gold

Um hmm hmm...

I've played cards in England
I've played cards in Spain
I'll bet you ten dollars
I beat you this game

Oh the coo-coo is a pretty bird
She wobbles when she flies
She never hollers coo-coo
'Til the fourth day of July

I've heard this before, the next verse is

If the ocean was whisky
and I was a duck
I'd dive to the bottom
and never come up

But the ocean aint whisky
and I aint a duck
so I'll play Jack of diamonds
and trust to my luck
