Did you use anti-malware bytes?  My mate had the same problem, you need to fix your registry,  short-term you should be able to get online in safemode with networking

Would a system restore do the job?

Is it the one where it sets itself as the program to open all programs with? Can change that in file types things, I'll have a nosy where that is in win 7 later as I have no idea off the top of my head and need to go and pick up my curry now.

I had a look and there doesn't seem to be a way to remove them from the list

This site has instructions on how to edit it yourself:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950505#LetMeFixItMyselfAlways

And this site has a registry edit you can download that says it will fix it:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/19449-default-file-type-associations-restore.html (note I found this site in google so I'm not vouching for its trustworthiness)

Looking at the file it has a load more entries in it than the MS fix.

I'd also say the fact that this got onto your computer in the first place highlights your security isn't up to scratch...
