At what stage do you draw the line on re-entering a tournament online.
I'm playing the DTD satellites a fair amount at the moment and the re-entry period extends, on the GP satellites at least, to a point where someone just bought back into a tournament to get 5000 chips at 400/800/75.
There were 14 left with an average in excess of 15000 and just two prizes.

Worth doing? Or just accept the exit and wait for the next opportunity?

On the other hand, the Deepstack satellite last Saturday night had 6 seats and I think 9 left when someone re-entered to pick up 10000 chips at 1k/2k/200 and I'd say that was probably a more advantageous spot given that the tourney we were playing towards had a significant overlay.

Is there a rational thought process to be applied here?

Re-enter until either the time or your balance runs out.

Re-enter until either the time or your balance runs out.

Explain why though? What advantage is there in re-entering the Golden Chip tourneys when there are 100s more still to be played?

If everyone has re-entered there will be more places paid, if they haven't re-entered then you will be closer to the places paid.

In reality you just have to make a judgment call. Your stack in relation to blinds, in relation to avg stack vs amount of players left and prize positions.

In both your examples I would probably re-enter. 5k at 400/800 75, one double if your'e not in the blinds puts you on pretty much avg stack and you are fine again. Obv this is all dependant on bankroll, how much you are willing to spend to sat in etc etc.

Re-enter until either the time or your balance runs out.

This if you're genuinely +EV over the field.

If not it depends how much money you're prepared to jizz away.

Surely you need cost of re-entry and value of prize otherwise we are just guessing as to if it is a good idea or not.  I suspect ICM will tell you it is almost always a good idea. 9 survivors and 6 tickets with an overlay seems like a no brainer to me

My take - Why buy ten big blinds when you can wait half an hour and buy 100 big blinds?

Surely it matters more how much your chips are worth?  If you can pay $10 for chips that are worth $20, you should do it whenever you get the opportunity?  I'd do that if I was just given 1 big blind.

I kind of buy that, in the sense that being still in with 6 left and 5seats is obviously worth something. But how do you value the chips you're buying?

If I'm understanding this then it makes early re-entry less viable than late which seems counter-intuitive.
