Result.

Thank you Doobs, I think we will be using the 'Grammarly Handbook' quite often.
Sorry Mohican for hijacking your thread BTW. I tend to do that a lot.

compasion / empathy fail ITT?

Spelling and grammar in the thread?

you're right, missing an 's' out of compassion is unforgivable.
Don't know how I live with myself.

And spaces either side of the slash. It's ok, you'll get over it with time ;-)

My apologies. My mates and I are in the middle of a pedantic spelling and grammar war at the moment on another thread elsewhere. It's spilling into other areas of my life and you appear to be an innocent caught in the crossfire!

Are spaces either side wrong? I always thought so, it seems to defeat the purpose, but old man Red insists on it, he even alters mine.
I've resisted contradicting him as yet, even though I know he's guess is probably as good as mine.
But, if I had someone to back me up..............

Morning Aunty.

Your Dad is wrong, but he'll not admit it, ever, he never does.

So it's bread/butter and not bread / butter?

Bread & butter, expressed as bread/butter, with or without spaces, has got nothing to do with the discussion at all. The slash indicates an alternative of the same thing. Bread is not an alternative to butter.

Bread & butter are different things, not alternatives to each other.

I had a sausage sandwich with red/brown sauce, for example, is perfectly correct. I had a sausage sandwich with bread/butter is just daft.

Aunty Daughter is correct. In fact it could even be Aunty/Daughter. Uncle Dad is wrong, however expressed. He always is, but never admits it. He is argumentative/stubborn, with or without spaces.

So'ok. The barbaric execution of a man pales into insignificance when the finer points of grammar are being discussed.

By the same token, you could argue that one execution pales insignificance when you consider the genocides where millions were, and for that matter still are being murdered.

Sigh. Perhaps i should have put this Wink at the end of my sentence. It was a light hearted response to the light hearted but 'off topic' grammar tiff that has taken place. Nothing more, nothing less.

Sigh..

So was mine.

Well, perhaps light hearted is the wrong word, but just taking the opportunity to make flippant yet hopefully poignant observation.

Certainly not a dig at anyone.

Did you deliberately make a bollocks of that sentence so that I would have something to work with?

I had a sausage sandwich with red/brown sauce seems wildly incorrect. If you're going to have a sausage sandwich in the future you could have red/brown sauce but if you've already had one why would you list the alternatives you could have? Spaces are obviously incorrect though so carry on.

"I had a sausage sandwich with red/brown sauce" is so obviously wrong, it should be "I had a sausage sandwich with Branston pickle".
