Whilst on holiday I visited a casino that gave me the option to surrender half my stake on blackjack. I'm wondering what would be the optimal way to play when you have 15 or 16 and the dealer has 10. If I take a card over half the deck busts me and if I don't over half the deck beats me so would surrendering half my stake in this situation be the best play? Not sure if the maths go a bit deeper here?

The US general optimal play is to surrender 16 against 9/10/A and to surrender 15 against a 10.

If you have found a UK table offering this (i.e. they do not have a hole card) then you should be much more liberal with surrendering e.g. against an ace.

Either way the EV of surrendering/not is generally marginal.

At DTD I surrendered against an ace, but lost the whole bet when the dealer made blackjack.
