After seven or eight years of faithful service my trusty Sony Trinitron gave up the ghost.
Tube almost blown and not worth repairing according to my man who knows his stuff.
So I wander into town in search of a reasonably priced replacement and they cost about £800/£1000.
You must be joking !
Of course they are all digital now, but I don't really want to spend that much.
£200/£300 was more like what I am thinking.
Anyone got any suggestions please ?

dependin on wat ur after argos do some nice ones.
we got our 36in widescreen from a shop in blackpool that did rentals n u could buy ex rentals im sure we paid 250 for it
try one of those sort of shops

I wouldnt dream of buying a TV at the moment that isnt "HD Ready".
What is "HD ready" Laz ? |

HD Ready means it is ready to receive High Definition broadcasts...now pay attention 007, this gets a bit complicated....
HD means it has "more lines" than a standard TV - STD telly is made up of 480 lines. HD broadcasts are either 1080 or 720. This means basically they can show more detail in the broadcast.
Sky will launch within weeks (we hope) their new HD set top box. It was initially thought that it would just have an "HDMI" interface on it, which is a fancy new style of digital connector, but the specs for the new box show that it also has component video outputs, so an HDtV with component input is also capable of receiving the broadcasts
The big showcase for HD is going to be the world cup. All cameras at the world cup will be recording in HD. It is believed that it will become the standard within a couple of years.
Most HD ready sets at the moment are either plasma or LCD. Slowly we are beginning to see the emergence of CRT sets capable of taking the HD sginals.

But are the games going to be broadcast in HD in this country? I don't think they are. The BBC has been shooting lots of programmes in HD for a couple of years (particularly stuff which will be sold to the US) but they're not broadcasting HD yet. As you said, Sky are starting HD broadcasts soon, but the World Cup isn't on Sky, it's on BBC and ITV. All this reminds me of the fuss about widescreen TVs in the run up to the last World Cup in Japan/Korea. Plenty of TVs were sold on the basis that 'you can watch the World Cup in glorious widescreen', except no one actually bothered to check if the football was going to be filmed in widescreen. It wasn't - it was all in normal 4:3. |

Interesting questions Andrew - indeed it all depends whether the BBC can get their act together in time, which seems unlikely, since they were unable to "deratio" the pictures from the african cup into a 16:9 format, and instead showed us two large vertical bars down the sides of the widescreen picture. Lovely. Even Eurosport managed to do that properly.
I do know this - having seen some HD test broadcasts I was blown away. And that was only in 720p. Imagine the possibilities with 1080p !!

What does 'deratio' mean? If the African Cup of Nations wasn't filmed in widescreen, the channels can't make it widescreen without losing areas of the image. The black vertical bars are on all 4:3 programmes which are viewed on a widescreen TV.
