right, help would be much appreciated.

i have recently inherited a free laptop, unfortunately it has a fault which i want rectifyed.  i'm not great with computers so i want to see if my description of the problem might lead to someone knowing the problem before i hand it in for repair and get screwed out of a fortune.

i think its a problem with the screen, when i turn it on at first it is fine but after only a minute or two the screen goes funny and is covered in lots of multi coloured vertical lines. i am still able to move the mouse and see its movement.

i don't know if the problem is just with the screen and when i move it goes funny or if it is just completely buggered.

has anyone encountered similar problems? or know what the problem is?

thanks for taking the time to read this post.

one thing worth checking would be if you can hook the laptop upto an external monitor - if this works ok it means that the problem lies with the actual screen. If it doesnt work then it is likely to be the graphics controller card which on most laptops is on the motherboard, which would mean you were pretty screwed.

Screens can be fixed, although often it isnt economical to repair them.

Can you tell me the make and model number of the laptop, might be able to tell more if we know that.

You need to plug in an external monitor through the VGA port, if the external monitor is ok then the LCD is bust.
If not then probably a loose connection.

Do you think if Bill Gates got laid in high school, do you think there'd be a Microsoft?
Of course not.
