It's entirely possible to be infected by a virus just by visiting a webpage (it would depend on many things being in place though).

In this case though it looks as if they were relying on people to download and then run the file (thinking it was something else). If i'd visited the page i'd still want to run a full AV scan just to be sure.

Closing the window would normally stop what the page was doing so should stop the virus from being run automatically if that is what the page was designed to do (provided it hadn't already been run, you may be too late).

Good point on the spyware scams too, i'd say always ask on here if you're unsure - they are several people who will be able to tell you what's what.

My brother had this on his laptop - something must have been downloadable on it as it hijacked his laptop, I had to reformat the damn thing for him - he had no firewall, no AV software, no spyware software on the lappy.  Needless to say when it went back to him it was loaded up with all sorts of protection.  If I could of found a condom to fit it, it would have been wearing one of those too.

Was the hijacker called spyware Quake?

I can't remember what it was called, I tried for hours to sort it out without a reformat, but in the end lost my rag and just reformatted it anyway - serves him right for going on dodgy sites!
