Part of the reason there was a surplus is they were testing the new pipe - so they had to pump it up to maximum pressure. Hence the surge in supply.

One of the strange things about gas is it actually moves very slowly - something like 4mph I think. So the network needs to predict the demand well in advance, and have local storage, because if there's a sudden surge in demand in London, and all the main storage is in Newcastle it's not going to get there in time.

Of course British planning laws mean the companies want to build extra storage that would alleviate this problem, but it takes years to get the OK to do so.
