A scenario I seem to find quite often is:  (1) a player goes all in before me
                                                          (2) I have a high pair
                                                          (3) for whatever reason, I'm fairly confident they have AK, AQ - or similar.

Sometimes (2) and (3) are the other way around, so I might have AK and I put them on a high pair, but I've kept the circumstance deliberately vague as I was wondering what situations would others call the all in here.

Obviously when you're short stacked its an instant call, but what about other stack sizes? at different stages of the tournament?

Edit: I was thinking about tournaments as I don't play much cash - I'm assuming it's always a call in cash?

Cash games you tend not to get all in's preflop (at least in my limited experience)

Depends on the stack size of the person making the move and the stage of the tourney.

If calling the all isn't going to do me much damage or it will at least leave me with chips to play with and if they are a low stack and they are first in, it's folded to me with no one or 1 person to go and it looks like they are trying to make a move, with AK, AQs I'd probably call most of the time.  Small and medium pairs I'd fold.  High pairs (jacks or better?) I'd call.  If there's a couple of callers to the all in, let them fight it out.

OK, It all depends on the stack size of both the person going all in and my own stack, and what it will leave me with if I don't win the hand.  Big stacks, I'm not getting involved with, small stacks, I'll probably go for it with AK, AQ plus mid pairs and above (9's or better).  Mid size stacks that will leave me down but not out, I'd probably only call with the premium pairs of jacks or better.

I'm trying to avoid going all in in a tourney full stop.  The only time I go all in if I know I am ahead and I can win the big pot.
I will call a coin flip if it is cheap and if I win the pot it will improve my position, but if I loose I will be still in a good shape to win the tourney.

in situation 1. you have a high pair...say Jacks..they have AK or AQ. I will call the all in as I am favourite and am fairly happy to take them odds.

in situation 2 you have AK and you guess they have a pair (doesn't matter whether high or low really as you're behind either way) I ussually don't take the shot unless I have a chance of putting myself in a position to win the tourney.

I've seen you push with AK on a number of occasions big fella!

Personally I'd rather do the calling pre flop when I think I am racing, probably depending on the buy in etc.  If its a bigger tourney I'm with tantrum I don't want to be getting all my chips in unless I am ahead.  If its a rebuy event I am calling every time pre-flop I can get away from it on the flop if my hand doesn't improve.
