Hi

just got in from a live game and was wondering what people thought of my final hand. The scene.....£5.00 rebuy, rebuy first two hours and an add on. 4 hours in, 27ish people left from the original 80. Blinds 1000/500. my stack of 15k above average for the 8 on the table. I get

From the button everyone folds to me in 4th place. i raise 5K. BB calls, his stack is about 17K.

Flop

BB bets 5K

I think for a minute and decide to raise all in for the rest of my chips, pot commited he calls and turns over

turn

River

Now, I reckoned to call my raise in the first place he must have at least a medium pair not QJ and then a straight draw and thats why when the flop came i wasnt that scared given the flop.

What would peeps have done in my situation?

Its a loose call with QJ off   although on the flop he has plenty of out, I misread it earlier and thought for some reason he had a gut shot.

I think maybe you should have played your AK stronger its only 4k for him to call from the BB.

I like his play, from his perspective he has any 8 any king and 3 queen and 3 jacks to give him the best hand, he has 13 outs if we discount the king thats in your hand. Preflop you are 15% ahead , and on the flop you are only 5% ahead, now given this is at at time when the blinds are huge in comparrison to the stacks I like the play, its a coin flip to double your stack.

Not a terrible play by anymeans, just a coinflip you lost.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I felt at the time i was doing the right thing to go all in because i just felt, you know that feeling you get when you know your ahead, it was the the right thing to do. On reflection, i think i should have flat called and probably folded given the flop. The tournie was a strange one for me, for the first two hours a guy next to me was hitting everything and had a stack of 53K at the break. I had paid for four rebuys during my time on the table which for me is not the norm, the norm being just one rebuy at the most, because i normally have played tight and managed to make a bit of a stack in the past. just after the break i had 1600 chips left (BB 800) and was moved to a different table, on the BB second hand in and I get  and was preparing to chuck my chips in but everyone folded to me and the table was split!! next table (BB now on 1000) Im under the gun and go all in and dont even bother to look at my cards, four callers and a guy on the button go s all in for about 17K, everyone folds, he turns over  , i turn over , and my kicker holds up. so within four hands from being almost out im back in the game. its a funny old game aint it!!!

looks like a typical overplaying of a hand to try and defend a big blind. It was a loose call, but the hand couldve played itself after that. You could argue your all-in or fold eitherway and I wouldnt come out strongly in favour one way or the other. Folding is ok, cos you still have average chips, and are still in the tourney.

I would tend not to try and tangle with the other big stack at the table at this time, you should be saving your bullets for the shorties.

With his stack size (The BB) once he calls your raise, he is pretty much commited as 4k out of 17 is more or less 1/4 of his stack. and he will be left with 11xbb after that (£5 rebuy- i doubt it he will fold after that)

I am not a big fan of calling 1/4 of my stack with QJo.  I either push with it or fold it.

When BB bets 5k = he will call your re-raise as now he is commited and has outs so you have to ask yourself can you get away or you are going broke.  You can't flat call here as you will be left with 5x bb which is pointless.

Although your stack is above average, you only have 15x BB so not much to space to manouver.  once you put 1/3 of your stack into the pot, you are commiting yourself more or less.  (yes you can still get away from the hand but tbh you will be left with 10xbb and you will need to get lucky in the nxt round to dble up)
