I've got AVG and would concur with Nemisis as it seems to do the trick for me.

However i don't visit politcal news websites very much

However i have been getting warnings the last couple of days that it will no longer be free from mid january. Any ideas or comments please?

Yes, but is that AVG Anti Virus

or

AVG Anti spyware

One is brilliant and the other crap with the latter being the brilliant piece of software!

I guess you are talking about anti virus. Therefore you should use NOD32.

I use AVG anti virus right now, but it will be running out soon.   I also get an annual flu jab to prevent me catching the flu virus, I would recommend this as well, but you may have a sore arm for a day or two afterwards.

NOD32 is well worth it.

The new version will have firewall and antispam and more and is meant to be very good...

Ok, I believe this is accurate....

It's the AVG anti-virus software that is running out mid January and that version (7.1  I think) will no longer free.

However there is now a new version of the AVG antivirus software that you can now download and that is still free (version 7.5).       Bizarre but true!!  >:?

The AVG anti-spyware software as Nem has already mentioned is well worth having.  I had severe spyware problems a couple of months ago and this picked up several things that both Spybot and Adaware missed.

The AVG anti-spyware software isn't free long term though as you only get a trial period of 30 days (from memory) before you need to acquire a license code.  This was only about £25 for two years though and I was happy to pay this based on the hole it helped me get out of.

personally i prefer to have a paid copy of both spyware and AV due to the fact a company need to keep them uptodate and to do this they need paid employees working 24/7 although some AV and spayware software is available free i find its normally a few hours behind the paid software in getting updates out to new threats
