Yesterday I decided to introduce Kizzy (my puppy) to the "Sit" and "Stay" commands. As this would be the first lesson where she had to actually do something (rather than stop doing something) I thought I would take along a small tit-bit to reward her with.

I don't agree with teaching dogs to perform for food, but with a greedy puppy it can help to make the first lesson or two a pleasent experience.

Raisins were the chosen treat (She adores them) so I slipped a couple into my pocket and took her out into the field. After a little coaxing I managed to push her into a sitting position and keep her there for a few moments, at which point I made a huge fuss of her, gave her the raisins and finished for the day. (always finish on a high)

Today I slipped the raisins into my pocket again and walked out into the field, when I looked around I saw that Kizzy hadn't followed me, very strange. I re-traced my steps and found her sitting rigidly to attention, staying for all she was worth, and waiting patiently for her raisins.

Thats the problem with training dogs, they learn by association if ideas, ie, they associate a certain action with a certain reaction. The words mean nothing, yet.

She may now associate sitting in that spot, facing a certain direction, with the sit command.

We shall see...

You should maybe try it on Mrs Red. "SIT"!
