Junior Memory Challenge™

Founder: Dr Sue Whiting, BSc (Hons) DPhil (Oxon) Five Times Ladies World Memory Champion 1994-1998.

In September last year the LSF launched a Pilot Scheme, called the Junior Memory Challenge™, under the aegis of the Junior Memory Championships.

It has been a great success and we now have 62 independent schools from around the London and Home Counties area participating.

The tests themselves will take place in January and February, 2008 and there will be a grand final on 8th March 2008 at Imperial College, London.

The competition is for children in Year 4 (8/9 year olds).

The tests are to be run one a week, over a four week period, and are designed to introduce children to a very simple, but highly effective memory technique.  Each test will comprise the memorisation of 50 words.  The top pupil from each of the 62 schools will then take part in the final.

The Challenge has been organised by Lady Mary Tovey on behalf of The Learning Skills Foundation™.

So on Saturday the Snat clan are all heading down to Imperial college to cheer on Rachel aged 9 who has qualified from her school and will be the only state school represented. We are of course tremendously proud of the fact that she has qualified. In the tests at school the children were given lists of 50 words that they have to memorise in 10 mins. they then have to write down the 50 words in order. Good luck if you try this one at home. I did. Totally useless. Must get it from her mother.

50 words in 10 minutes and then writing hem down IN ORDER? That's some challenge.

Best of luck to your little one.
