Alternatives to BT

I hate them.  I do so hate them with every fiber of my being, but what are the alternatives?  I have Sky TV and O2 broadband, both of which require a BT landline no? Or do they?  What are the available alternatives people?

I have sky tv, sky broadband and sky line rental. I pay nothing to BT at all and I love it.

Some of the money you pay still goes to the wholesale arm of BT.  It's just the retail part that you're not paying.

I have a bt land line but am with Sky. Sky took over my line rental from BT and have given me a £10 reduction in my monthly bill. We used to pay Bt £30 plus a 1/4 plus we paid sky for our broadband and tv pkg, plus HD box which was almost £40 p month. We spoke to Sky,and got rid of the HD rental 0f 10 p month they also took over our BT line rental which will cost us nothing for 12 months. We now pay around 26 p m for telephone /line/ broadband/ sky plus and sky pkg and nothing to bt.

You had to go and spoil it, I now have to cancel my phone line. Next you will say that BT get money when I phone a landline from my mobile.

LOL - it's no better with any alternative though.  With Virgin I got to speak to Ian in Goa (or wherever he was).

Not sure where this bloke was but his name was David and he sounded South African to me and a bit effeminate. I'm pretty sure he called me honey at one point.  The automated stuff you have to negotiate initially is enough to put you on life tilt, especially when it gets all the way to "press 4 if you want to order a paper bill" and then silence and you still haven't heard an option relevant to your problem.  Now what!?  You ring back and listen to them again.  Then you just pick any one of them just so you can get to talk to a real person, or Colin if he's the only one available. 

David's system had been giving him problems all day apparently so he asked me if he could ring me back. He did so after five minutes, then wanted to ask me some security questions!  We just spoke David I explained, and anyway, you're ringing me!!  Who the f**k am I if I'm not me?  Then his system went down again.  He asked me if I would call back and then THEN asked me if I wouldn't mind answering some questions regarding my experience with BT customer services! I was crying at this point so just hung up.  I can't cope with it.  I can't escape them, I feel trapped, like a rat.

If you don't want your landline with BT, you need to be on an exchange with other people's kit in. Very useful site is here. That will tell you which other operators might be available. If you're on a diddy rural exchange (me ), you may have no choice. Urban ones usually have 3-7 other operators in there. Some will be only for broadband, but people like Sky & Talktalk will completely take over from BT, AFAIK.
