Microsoft Windows Search Indexer has stopped working

When I "Check online for a solution" just sends an error report - I see nothing.

Have tried to turn Indexing back on in services just fails and get an error message.

Restore point not helped.  Have scanned disk again no help.

Any ideas?

Not come across this one.  Does this mean you can't search for files on your computer now?

No need to PM Kev, I found the post myself Smiley

Right, it should be an easy enough problem to fix... you simply need to delete the existing indexing files then allow the machine to rebuild them after a reboot.

Show hidden files and folders (Control Panel>Folder Options>View tab - advanced options = click on the "show hidden files and folders"). Then navigate to the following locations and delete all the files and folders inside these directories (might be wise to create a backup first...)

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows

and

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Temp

Now reboot the PC and go to Control Panel>System and Maintenance> Index Options> Advanced - there should be an option to rebuild the index in the troubleshooting section - be warned, it might take a long time!

That sounds roughly right... GL and the bill is in the post  Cheesy

Jane,

Thanks for taking the time.

All of the above fine until reboot - then at destination you suggested the rebuild index option is not available only reset to default?

Any ideas?

Errrm, ok... Not sure why you are not being given the rebuild option, is it completely absent or simply greyed out?

Some options are also not available if using Home Basic, but I'm also assuming you are using Home Premium...hopefully under an Administrator account?

I'll do a little research and see what I can find.

Greyed out, and yes Premium and Admin access.

Well that's better than no option at all!

Just a though, I notice that you said in an earlier post that you tried to turn the Search Indexing back on, but it failed to fix the problem. Have you tried to turn the indexing back on since deleting the files and folders? It should allow you to do so now, then go to the rebuild area as above and hopefully you will have the option - fingers crossed.
