From my basic research it seems difficult at least.

This is not music purchased from itunes just my CD collection uploaded via my PC onto my ipod/iphone via itunes.

I did try and drag/drop from "my music" on my PC to the "music" file on my new HTC 'phone but the files just disappeared.

Might be worth investigating Google play. I imported  CDs into iTunes on my laptop and Google play can be configured to upload in turn from iTunes. Once in Google play music can be accessed via WiFi/3g or downloaded onto phone.

Managed to transfer everything over with a little help from a tech-savvy friend and a bit of kit called "synchtunes".

They have a clever strategy where they let you synch 100 tunes free so you get how simple it is and how well it works but if you want more you have to pay a £2.25 fee, cunning buggers.

Anyhow I now have 1000+ tunes safely installed just in case I get sat in between Ade and Frankie Wink

<edit>

PS The great thing about the £2.25 purchase of the "pro" version was that it had a fifteen minute "cooling-off" period during which you can change your mind and have your money back, but it took about twenty minutes to transfer all of the music into my phone.
