i got an email from British Midland Diamond Club which said they apologised for offering me a chance to win tickets to an England Rugby match and that it was wholly inappropriate and hoped it didnt cause too much offence...

Looks like a well run PR jobby to me (free advertising) the policeman having words with the shoppy man is likely made up bollox.
