For that budget the missus recommended the Canon EOS 500D.

No idea if this is a decent place to buy a camera from:

I have a Canon (450D) and it's very nice.  I quite like the look of that new Nikon advertised on tele though, the D5100?  Could be me just getting sucked in by the advertising though.
mmm, the Canon 1100D and the 600D do similar funkyness.

Think about a used one maybe? My mate picked up a Canon 1000D for around your budget that had hardly been used in Jessops.

Any of the entry range of canons that has been mentioned would be fine, there would be no real difference to the casual user.
