One of the most important things I think is your choice of starting region. You need to choose those that have no 10's, and try to ensure you get at least one cheap '3'. This will allow you to have completed a region by the fourth turn. If you haven't, and the other guy has, he'll probably always beat you.
Helps to use the Analysis tool also. To take over a '2', you're guaranteed it invading with 4, but sometimes invading with 3 has a much better chance than others.
I was invading a bunch of two spades with early on, cheaper than failing and having to try again. But I ran into someone early who just knocked me over with a big army (he had probably won a reinforcement card by risking 3-strong armies into 2).

Not totally sure how best to approach early contact. Some say use all your good cards and put everything you have into knocking them over. Or trying to at least.

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down 'happy'. They told me i didn't understand the assignment, and I told them they didn't understand life.
