From what I can gather, the Irish defender strikes the ball to clear it from his 18 yard box towards the ether, but it ricochets and strikes the adjacent Croatian player, thus being played onto Jelavic who was, as the Irish team manager said, "two metres offside"

Is there a rule which says if the ball is played unintentionally to a player in an offside position, it is not offside?

Also, in the event of such a rule not existing, what of "a player must be deemed not to be interfering with the play in order to not be in an offside position". Jelavic was clearly interfering with the play.
