Anyone know what software I need to play them on my computer? Real player tries to load up but isn't working.

Not 100% sure but try VLC - very rare it doesn't play a video file!

A lot of HTC devices record video in .3GP format, and VLC will play those (and pretty much everything else as the others have mentioned).

vlc is great.

If you must convert, quickmediaconverter also great. And it's free, which a nit like yourself will love :p
