I really know nothing of this sport, can someone explain exactly how the team work element of it works? Shouldn't everyone just be racing for themselves?

It's another one of those sports where the commentators engage in that tiltiest of pseudointellectual utterances:

"It's turning into a real chess match now"

Love watching the sport, but that's the commentator equivalent of "Ace King. It's only ace high at the end of the day"
