Get one with USB3. Even if you've not got USB3 on your PC atm when you upgrade it'll be well worth it.

The speed difference is huge.

Not that expensive either, can be found from around £50. Might be worth spending a little more though if you're backing up valuable data?

Of course, the best time to buy is 6 months after your purchase - as Moore's law dictates the price will be cheaper: http://www.mkomo.com/cost-per-gigabyte Cheesy

This is the one I use - http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/western-digital-my-passport-portable-hard-drive-1tb-black-14553716-pdt.html

Very sleek looking and very quick if you have USB3. Decent price and does exactly what I need it to. Only problem with it is the lead is quite short but I'm sure you could buy another one if it caused any huge concerns.

If you're looking for a permanently stationed external HD then I'd go for something a bit more sturdy but if you need it to be portable for use on multiple machines then you'd struggle to go wrong with this one.

it depends whether you want one that requires external power or not. i used to have one that did, but having a little one that doesn't is so much nicer.

i have this which i use for plugging in the back of the tv, not usb3 but very happy with it :
