Has anybody built there own PC ?

Looking for help/ Guidance on Websites places to buy Parts. PC usage is for Poker and internet Browsing. Would like to do this pretty cheaply £200?

Any help also on a new Monitor around 22 inch.

Plenty of people on here who've done this and can help.

As far as monitors go, I'd probably be going for a 24" LED one like these:

I've never bothered worrying about 'brands' too much, as they all seem pretty decent to me.  Someone might tell you different though.  I'd also go for two monitors for a desktop as well.

Have been messing around with this,

It's been gathering dust since 2010. Will just upgrade it bits at a time.

How many tables/sites are you looking to play at the same time?
Do you have anything currently?

Good place to start http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/

Can see price of parts etc here: http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/partlist/

Unfortunately you're not going to get much for £200. For a start you're going to have to pay £75 for an OS which doesn't leave much for hardware.

Building your own won't work out any cheaper than buying one. PC manufacturers are in a highly competitive market and they work on low margins. They also have ridiculous buying power. You won't build anything cheaper.

You'd be much better off buying a second hand one and upgrading bits as and when you feel like it or can afford it.

Having said that building one is a piece of piss. I didn't have a clue until I actually did it. If you want to build one as a project I'd say go for it. If you're looking to save money by building it yourself forget it because you won't.

Do you know if this is true of the high spec gaming towers?  (Talking about something costing £1k+)

If it's an off the shelf mass produced high spec one then I'd guess at yes.

If it's one where you spec it yourself and they build it for you then it'll be cheaper doing it yourself.

The problem when you want high spec is that there's always going to be something not quite right so you have to go bespoke. That's when it gets expensive to pay someone else to build it for you.

I don't know why they call it 'building' by the way. You just buy the bits, plug a few wires in and press "on". There's no building involved, just assembling.

Everything's standardised so there's a place for every bit you buy. It's easy but obviously takes a few hours.

The hardest thing by far was deciding what bits to buy. That took ages!! Putting them together was easy.

I really don't think it's possible to go wrong. The wires look complicated but they really aren't. Because they're standardised the motherboard one will only fit the motherboard, the hard drive one will only fit the hard drive and so on....

If you're going high spec I'd do it yourself purely so you can say you have. Even when you realise how simple it was you'll still be proud of yourself and you'll learn a bit as well.

EvilPie has it pretty much nailed on.

If you want a machine for general use then just buy one.

If you want something with higher performance then buying the parts separately is often the way to go.
