I loved double deckers . I wasthe first kid in the area to have them as my dad was a long distance lorry driver and used to bring them back from Scotland as the were unavailable in England at the time . It was the same time as the bread strike in England as he used to also bring back bread for the whole street from Scotland

There was a bread strike? Yes, I was young then by the way but I vaguely remember there was as my dad used to bring it back from Scotland . Tikay would probably remember it well Or bakers strike but there was definitely a shortage

There was a bread strike? I remember the bread strike. I was a hero if I brought a loaf home.

My mum still tells me stories about rationing during WW2. My grandparents were skint farmers, sometimes dinner would be whatever my grandad could go out and shoot, sometimes nothing, but if they were lucky it might be a rabbit or bird of some description.

I was only nine weeks old at the time so I doubt it affected me much. I have no idea why people queued down the street though. Surely they could have have a nice quinoa salad or something for lunch instead?

If ever a photo could make me feel old this would be it. When I first saw it I just assumed it was from some earlier bread strike. In the 40's or early 50's, before I was born for sure. The bread strike I remembered was in 1978, that photo couldn't possibly have been taken then. Apparently it was, I was 24 and married, working as a sales rep and used to manage to bring home a loaf a couple of times a week by seeking out the small independent bakers. Obviously this was before we invented artisan bakers (and salad)
